General Discussion for politics in the UK.
Please don't post to both !uk_politics@feddit.uk and !unitedkingdom@feddit.uk .
Pick the most appropriate, and put it there.

Posts should be related to UK-centric politics, and should be either a link to a reputable news source for news, or a text post on this community.

Opinion pieces are also allowed, provided they are not misleading/misrepresented/drivel, and have proper sources.

If you think "reputable news source" needs some definition, by all means start a meta thread. (These things should be publicly discussed)

Posts should be manually submitted, not by bot. Link titles should not be editorialised.

Disappointing comments will generally be left to fester in ratio, outright horrible comments will be removed.
Message the mods if you feel something really should be removed, or if a user seems to have a pattern of awful comments.

!ukpolitics@lemm.ee appears to have vanished! We can still see cached content from this link, but goodbye I guess! :'(

WTF is this shit Ed? I think I'm going to revoke my membership. Voted Labour last time anyway so my heart hasn't really been in it this year... At least I was able to vote against Layla Moran becoming leader a few years back.

Assuming this isn't fiction...

I thought the paddleboarding etc stunt photos and playing dress up on morning TV shows was a bad idea, but that campaign did get attention and it's still paying dividends. I'm therefore reluctant to say this stunt is idiotic... But it really is if the party wants to be taken seriously

During the run up to the GE, Farage was sucking up any media attention that wasn't on Sunac or Starmer. If Davey hadn't done those ridiculous stunts then no-one would have heard anything about the Lib Dems at all. I guess he feels that is still true.

Presumably they've crunched the numbers and think that making the kind of young people who will see these videos more aware of the lib dems is worth other people laughing at them

I don’t know what it is about archive.is but I always get stuck in a captcha loop. Based off the headline though I’m looking forward to this being covered on HIGNFY

will dance on TikTok every day until he accepts

Why should Starmer care?

Seriously, I can't see Eds goal here. Starmer will ignore it. Ed will look like an idiot.

And what the hell is playing a video games expected to achieve?

Maybe Ed is just lonely and has no no one to play FIFA with?

The goal here is that it's famously difficult for third parties to get an appropriate measure of media attention in the UK. The newspapers are highly partisan, and the TV news interprets the 'balance' requirement to mean they can just give the government view and the main opposition view on every issue (unless the government and main opposition happen to agree - which is why the Lib Dems got a fair hearing in the media on Iraq in the early 2000s).

So third parties need to have a gimmick to trick the media into giving them airtime, which then allows them to talk about their issues. Charles Kennedy did it but being entertaining on chatshows and HIGNFY; Nigel Farage does it by being outrageous and offensive; and Ed Davey has worked out that he can do it through stunts.

While we have FPTP, 3rd party voting will always be seen as dangerous. Because it is.

The issue here is not him being noticed. It that unless he is willing to do this Dance every day till Starmer Dies. He is going to look like an idiot. Starmer has absolutely 0 motive to respond. So at some point Ed is going to go back on his "dance on TikTok every day until he accepts" claim. Meaning he will look like his promises are worthless.

All over a video game challenge that means nothing politics wise.

Is Fifa as bad as domestic abuse and your partner needing the police to be called out for their safety?

Ed's an idiot, but very different situations.

Yeah that was exactly the reason I voted for Ed over Layla back then.

I'm just getting tired of his capering now. The election is over!
