Now take a bow

I might summon up enough scraps to make a little one! So you didn't add any weight to the base? I feel like I would add sand in the bottom, but it looks stable as is.

What PVC is UV resistant? Mine would be on the firing range at my camp, outside 24/7/365. Did you use the purple/blue compound to fit it?

I just asked the plumber for surface pipe, not the type that goes underground. I just used standard pvc glue. I have two screws on the bottom of the upright for some strength, but it doesn’t seem to need it.

What size pipe is that? 1 1/4”? I plan to blatantly copy you haha

It is 40mm. The only problem is the long upright, it is a bit bendy so you need a support to keep it from sagging when you have two bows on there. I just used a scrap bit of aluminum angle to support it.

I see the cross bracing now that you point it out, thanks!

Hey, that's brilliant! It's especially cool that it's light enough to lug out of the garage every time you want to use it. I have a bag stand for my target, but I almost never use it because it's heavy and cumbersome.

Thanks! This is very light, you can just pick it up with one hand and put it where you need it. πŸ‘πŸ» Also weatherproof, so I just leave it outside.

PVC gets very brittle in direct sunlight if you don't coat it, in case you didn't know!

Very cool bow stand!

This is UV resistant, made to sit in the sun all day.

ayy you covered all your bases excellent job!!

My wife isn't keen on me leaving my archery stuff outside, and I understand her point. Still super cool though! Thanks for sharing.

I hope the glue will hold up to all that torque!

[–] shalafi@lemmy.world 2 points 2 days ago (1 children)

Plumber buddy taught me that PVC glue isn't glue. It's a compound that melts the joints together as strong as the pipe itself. Neat!

You’re telling me that owning a can of blue stuff makes me a certified welderβ€½ My dad would be so proud…

[–] johsny@lemmy.world 2 points 2 days ago

Been using it for a while now, sometimes with two bows, and it is still holding up.

That’s a useful and well designed setup, nice!

I know nothing about archery this just popped up on my feed, but is how does that pulley thing actually work? There's a very stiff bow and then you get easier extension of the string with the pulleys - but what is the point of this instead of a just standard less stiff bow and normal string straight string?

The center part looks very stiff, so I guess there's less lateral flex for increased accuracy?

I think you are talking about the Cams, which gives mechanical advantage, eg at the end of the draw cycle you are pulling back (and holding) only 75% (this is adjustable on some cams) of the 40 pounds of draw weight.

Longer stiffer risers are more stable and more accurate. There is also a lot of physics involved with the limb angles etc. to absorb more vibration and shock, for quiter and more stable shots.
