I've watched Alien as much as any movie excepting Aliens, so I kinda lost appreciation. My wife had never seen it so we watched and I payed close attention for the first time in years. Absolute master class in the genre.

The language is brilliant. At first you have to pay very close attention to understand them, but as the movie progresses you quickly get in the groove. And Anya Taylor-Joy, my god.

The feds have nothing to do with driver's licenses. States have agreements to honor each other's licenses.

Why would your SSN not suffice?

God forgive me but I might like Rogue One better than Empire. Is that a heresy?!

Saw a hulking Florida Panther on a lonely creek in NW FL. Wikipedia says there's only a small population in the very south.

Let me make two notes:

A "school shooting" is any time a gun goes off on any school grounds. You can go to the elementary soccer field and put one in the ground at midnight, "school shooting". Mass shootings are not what you picture in your mind when that word comes up.

The Gun Violence Archive and Everytown for Gun Safety are two of the most biased sources related to guns.

I pour the lead in silicone molds which I have from making resin doodads. Made a Han Solo in carbonite! Also have a Death Star, an octopus and a little pyramid. Takes a long time to gather enough for even a small project. I got the melter because I was going to try my hand at making bullets for my black powder guns but I've since soured on that project.

My wife is from the Philippines. You can be damned sure we have a rice cooker. :)

Jo Koy has a bit where you can always find the dark kitchen in a Filipino house. Aim for the red light on the rice cooker. Also, that video taught me to cook rice. My wife was laughing her ass off because it's perfectly true.

My combat boots were the first thing to come to mind, along with the socks. Bought both 3-years ago and none show any real wear.

I've abused hell out of the boots, and they're stained with oil and god knows what else, but they fit perfectly and don't have any "mechanical" wear, only cosmetic. I was a little leary of the low price, but damn, they're a steal. I'd buy them again but I'd have to drop the original pair in a wood chipper to fuck them up.

The socks are still elastic and warm, cushiony, never popped a hole. Wish I could afford another set and I wish I hadn't looked that up. Just too broke ATM, and will be for some time.

Lately I've been on a kick wearing stretch pants. Like yoga pants for men? What are those called? Got a pair at TJ Maxx, went back the next day for another.

The Firebird get you thinking on that too? :)

Finished a short horror tale yesterday. Is there a spot on lemmy that would get it read and criticized?

She had interviewed and met both remotely and in person, this guy was merely an HR drone confirming her documentation. I was a little bent when she told me he had asked her to remove her blur filter "to have a look at her working environment, make sure it's not cluttered" (something along those lines). No one else at this company requested such. Was he way out of line?

I should note, this is my PC in our living room and not where she will be working from. And this guy wants a look around our home?! Told my wife to bring this up once she's settled in, ask HR if this is policy. She started today!

She thinks it's a racism thing. I'm not so sure, but I don't have any other explanation.

Where do I begin to even see if I'm interested?

I'm wanting something to run around the hood and offroad, mostly in deep sand. An electric version of this: https://www.tractorsupply.com/tsc/product/coleman-mini-bike-bt200x-g

What else do I need to be concerned about?

It stands to reason he must have been doing something right to have stayed so close to the halls of power.

I was a toddler when he was carpet bombing Cambodia, never knew him as anything but "an important person" that was sometimes on the TV. Only learned of his crimes in the past decade.

How did an in-your-face war criminal retain such influence for so long?

I'm an old (GenX), straight, white, American guy, but I'm right with you all.

I might say things that are offensive, because I can't pretend to be in your shoes and might get something wrong. I'm often just trying to understand. Hell, I didn't figure out that gay rights are civil rights, my rights, our rights, until 10+ years ago.

It's 100% OK if you want to keep this a non-cis space. I get that and won't be butthurt.

(If shotguns are your jam, I got many more to post! Weirdly, of all the antique and vintage shotguns I have, this cheap-ass Turkish thing runs like a dream.)

Nothing fancy, neither is terribly new or old. Not being able to sew is really holding me back on DIY projects.

Is there an "Operating a Sewing Machine for Dummies" video or tutorial you like?
