How about instead of making nothing in the phone decent except the camera, we put more memory in the phones and make them usable for actual computing

[–] Flocklesscrow@lemm.ee 16 points 3 weeks ago (1 children)

Give me back my headphone jack. No one asked for fucking mandatory Bluetooth.

[–] ByteMe@lemmy.world 5 points 3 weeks ago (1 children)

But we put more battery in it

[–] InverseParallax@lemmy.world 4 points 3 weeks ago

-They didn't.

You think a phone with 512GB storage and 12gb RAM is lacking? Phones should be way faster and snappier with what resources they have, Android and iOS are just bad in using what they have available

These days phones have a lot of ram. It isn't uncommon to see a 4gb phone.

[–] SplashJackson@lemmy.ca 2 points 4 weeks ago

Yes, and it's very sad.

[–] MY_ANUS_IS_BLEEDING@lemm.ee 1 points 3 weeks ago (1 children)

Because that's still very niche. Flagship phones have more than enough power for the vast majority of users and have done for years now. The cost/benefit analysis doesn't add up

[–] SplashJackson@lemmy.ca 1 points 3 weeks ago

Better not develop anything for the platform that needs any real processing power then, let's just keep phones as data harvesting tools and nothing more

[–] cmgvd3lw@discuss.tchncs.de 1 points 4 weeks ago (1 children)

Oh no we have lots of thermometers left over from Covid, how about we put them in your phone instead?

[–] SplashJackson@lemmy.ca 3 points 4 weeks ago (1 children)

That way I can use my phone for my favourite way to get my temperature!

I'll let you come up with a mental image of that, on the house

[–] catloaf@lemm.ee 4 points 4 weeks ago

But you're not supposed to put things in your ear!

[–] ElPussyKangaroo@lemmy.world 20 points 4 weeks ago (1 children)

Just leave it be. How often do we need to increase the MP count of the sensor?! It's anyway an insanely small sensor.

Just make another Galaxy Camera ffs. Call it Galaxy Snap or something. Or the Pixel Snap. Or whatever tf you want. Just stop obsessing over changing stuff that's alright.

I've been a mid-range phone user since around 2018 or so. Don't really see any reason to get flagships.

The one area where mid-range devices do lag the flagships is camera quality.

[–] ElPussyKangaroo@lemmy.world 5 points 4 weeks ago (1 children)

Same here. I buy Xiaomi midrangers or their Poco devices. They have great hardware for the most part, and have amazing custom ROM support.

As for camera hardware, a surefire way to improve your picture quality is by using a GCam Mod for your device. You can check on Telegram if your device has a Photography group (search "devicename Photography" or similar words) OR you can search for your device on the official website for them.

[–] Alphane_Moon@lemmy.world 4 points 4 weeks ago (1 children)

I used to use Gcam mods, but I stopped because there were too many issues with making sure they worked correctly.

I think in 2-3 years the difference in camera quality between mid-range devices and flagships will be small enough that it won't matter for most people.

[–] ElPussyKangaroo@lemmy.world 3 points 4 weeks ago (1 children)

I'm sorry that you had to experience that. It's definitely the case that you have to test many different mods and different configs for them. It helps to be on a Telegram group that has people sharing official config files that they have tested for the various features for your device.

If you don't mind me asking, what device do you use currently? Maybe I could help you find a suitable GCam mod? I only suggest this because I have found it to improve images multifold for me.

[–] Alphane_Moon@lemmy.world 2 points 4 weeks ago (1 children)

Thank you for the offer and kind words. I use a A73 these days. To be honest, the quality is good enough for my needs. I do notice a difference with friend's pictures. Don't really need a GCam mod at this point.

[–] ElPussyKangaroo@lemmy.world 1 points 4 weeks ago

Oh I see... Samsung's do have good enough picture quality. Fair enough.

[–] MY_ANUS_IS_BLEEDING@lemm.ee 2 points 3 weeks ago

I've reverted to buying the previous year's flagships now. When you do a side by side comparison the only real difference between last year's and this year's is Β£300-400.

[–] HeavyRaptor@lemmy.zip 9 points 3 weeks ago (1 children)

Ugh, another opinion piece. They don't even have comparison images.

[–] higgsboson@dubvee.org 1 points 3 weeks ago

Probably part of someone's marketing budget at Apple.

I had a Galaxy S20 and the video recording was constantly choppy. I was very excited to get my Pixel 8 and the video is choppy. Am I just cursed or do these Android phones have a hard time with video?

[–] MY_ANUS_IS_BLEEDING@lemm.ee 3 points 3 weeks ago

You might be cursed. I've never noticed any choppy video and I was still on a pixel 4 until last week

Video is amazing on my s22. And I'm picky since I work professionally in video.

[–] Alphane_Moon@lemmy.world 2 points 3 weeks ago

Going to pile on, I have a Samsung A73 and videos are fine.

Do you use some sort of custom settings?
