That story explains why I dislike led lights

Those deep blue LED Xmas lights are the worst for whatever reason.

LEDs in general aren't good for your mental health either. Unless it's an organic screen (OLED), you're getting too much blues in your lighting and it will make you crave sunlight. They've known this for decades. In the winter, get outside more, not less, you need the full spectrum of the sun.

Sorry, but what you are saying here is utterly incorrect.

  • OLEDs have exactly the same color distribution of LED backlit screens. You can easily see that for yourself by viewing anything on the screen and seeing that the color isn't shifted into red/orange/green direction.
  • Blue light isn't some magical thing that only works subcounciously. It's a color you can see.
  • If you have white lights at home (no matter whether it's LED, incandecent or open flames), you are getting orders of magnitude more blue light than what your screen produces.
  • Sunlight contains orders of magnitude more blue light than any lighting you have at home.
  • The blue light of your screen isn't in any way harmful to your eyes. If it was, then your eyes would burn out the second you step into sunlight.
  • The thing that keeps you from sleeping isn't the blue light of your phone, but the fact that you are doomscrolling on your phone instead of sleeping. What is keeping you awake is that you are actively engaging your brain instead of resting.

And lastly: the only people who have "known" the fear of blue lights for decades are also people who "know" that homeopathy is medicine.

i thought i read something about a new blue oled (pholed) that was supposed to bring it into some parity with the other 2 in the oled space.. so that may not be a source of 'less blue' in the future

I looked into it, thanks for the heads up. https://www.digitaltrends.com/home-theater/what-is-pholed/

My guess is that companies want to call themselves OLED and charge those prices while giving an inferior light source. People will spend the money and not get the value from it, the gorgeous colors they can't get to.

OLED is for better contrast and refresh rate than LCD . There is nothing about the technology that makes its blues "better" than a blue LCD filter.

You're right, OLED has great reds and LEDs don't. Thank you for clarifying that.

[–] Blue_Morpho@lemmy.world 0 points 8 months ago (1 children)

There is no difference in color accuracy for any colors between a high end LCD and high end OLED. OLED looks better because of contrast, not because a color is more accurate.

BS, sorry. That's based on color standards that don't mean anything. If you're in the business, you know that's true. Why do you care what I think?

[–] Blue_Morpho@lemmy.world 0 points 8 months ago (1 children)

Scientifically reproducible tests don't mean anything?

If you prefer the colors of a particular tv, or phone screen, that's fine. But that's not a claim of color accuracy. Accuracy requires measurement, not an opinion.

Yup, I've bought a laptop with an IPS screen for editing my RAW pictures. I thought of going for an OLED screen, but it turns out they use PWM at very low frequencies (many even as low as 60Hz). Pair that with burn-in problems...

This article is off in a few ways.

  • Incandecent lamps also flicker, most often at 60hz.
  • LED flickering is only a thing if you are dimming these LEDs. Something that hardly ever happens with outdoor decorations.
  • When I was a kid, all the old people where going on about how these modern incandecent lights are ruining the Christmas mood and that only candles with actual fire are good.

It's mostly the old fear of new things.
