Aren’t a large proportion of the people in Monmouthshire descendants of all the English (and others) who migrated there from the mid/early 1800s?

I’m sure when I was doing the family tree that I read somewhere there was a point where the Welsh considered Monmouthshire more English than Welsh.

I've lived in both halves along the bottom and it's quite accurate. That said, a lot of people in Camarthenshire & Pembrokeshire seem to have quite southernly English accents but are Welsh, a lot are native Welsh speakers so that might give the impression that there's a lot of English people there.

Driving through FUCKING NOTHING is amazing though, stunning views and countryside. I've no idea how the random pockets of people can live there though and not go insane.

For the last few years we go on holiday to Wales and stay in the 'nothing' zone. I don't get how people live there without going insane. Lovely to visit but I wouldn't want to live there.

We stayed at a campsite once which promoted being off the grid, the facilities were actually the best over ever seen. To get a phone signal it was 15min drive away. Off the grid was nice but planning the next day events was a bit difficult. Kind of shows how reliant we are on technology for basic map reading. Not sure how I feel about that.

Something that I always wonder about people that live in these places is: what do they do for work? There's barely anything around. My only conclusions are that they're either retired, or farm workers.

Live in North Wales, this map is 100% accurate. Can’t move for scousers round here, have to keep my trainers in a safe at night.

Confirmed I have mates from Wrexham and Colwyn Bay who are not even slightly Welsh. You could extend that area to Anglesey.

It's a reference to The Sons of Glyndŵr who burnt holiday homes, inspired by Owain Glyndŵr who a revolt against the English in the early 1500s.

I want to live in the fucking nothing part.

I would advise against it if you have young kids. I grew up there and there is absolutely nothing to do, so early age drinking and other things become the norm.

If you're an adult, it's beautiful for outdoor activities - and great for fitness, with all the hills!

It's lovely. I know people who do.
