The vegan place to discuss things.

Veganism is a philosophy and way of living which seeks to exclude—as far as is possible and practicable—all forms of exploitation of, and cruelty to, animals for food, clothing or any other purpose; and by extension, promotes the development and use of animal-free alternatives for the benefit of animals, humans and the environment. In dietary terms it denotes the practice of dispensing with all products derived wholly or partly from animals.

Like, I get it - there are people in both communities that might be pushy in one way or another. But, like, come on. One of them is a way of life that strives towards excluding as much pain and suffering in the world of innocent beings as possible and the other is a fucking OS. Grinds my gears.

Any thoughts?

Edit: What I meant specifically is the "pushiness" and "preachiness" that's attributed to both. Not sure if this is just my bias from observing comments about the recent discourse around the whole vegan cat food debacle, but yea

Amen to that.

Society is structured to marginalize new ideas that challenge social cohesion. In this way both linux evangelists and vegans are going to be denigrated as preachy because of the status quo's defense mechanisms. The only reason this seems related though is lemmy and the completely ridiculous linux discourse.

Linux already won. Linux dominates all other operating systems by far. Most servers in the world are linux, most phones are android, most laptops are chromebooks. iOS and Mac OS are BSD. The discussion on Lemmy is solely about endpoints people are using to play video games. The Arch thing is just a stupid meme.

I too wish I could impress on people how much more important veganism is than linux lol

This was unexpected. I'm a vegan Arch Linux user, never heard of any association to be honest.

Being against gassing animals to death and being for finding better ways to express that opinion with software aren't exclusive to each other. Arch Linux is a community around a tool and veganism is a philosophy of how to use our tools. No need to hate on either or to keep them separate. Veganism is grim, but it is not a funeral.

It's the result of the meme factor that both groups will self identify themselves. It's the age old joke of "how do you know someone [is/does] Z"? (They'll tell you)

Doesn't bother me though

One of them is a way of life that strives towards excluding as much pain and suffering in the world of computing as possible and the other is a fucking moral philosophy.
