Lately when I forced to login to FaceBook they will sent a WhatsApp message to my phone number, even though I don't use WhatsApp. I'd like to see if there is really an account with my number. I tried going to the web client but it seems to be requiring to pair with a device app.

You could ask a friend to contact you via Whatsapp. It should say that this number is not using WhatsApp yet.

So yeah the person said it told them there wasn't an account for me and it sent me an SMS inviting me to join. But then they said the message they sent showed the blue double checkmark indicating the message had been seen. 😕 So I loaded the app on an old phone with no other apps or anything on it, and it registered my number without any fuss. So I guess Meta was put out a good psych game. But it's weird that the message was read before I setup the app.

The person who had your number previously used WhatsApp. Maybe they are still using that number for WhatsApp.

Without regular access to the phone number, WhatsApp will not work. I know it's a couple months (from long term travel), but not longer. I set up an account for the landline at work, but it fails every few months and has to be re-established

Doesn't Facebook require your name? WhatsApp would have your phone number already from when friends, family, etc. share their contacts. Maybe they would send a link to install WhatsApp.
