Welcome to the discussion of US Politics!

Rules:

  1. Post only links to articles, Title must fairly describe link contents. If your title differs from the site’s, it should only be to add context or be more descriptive. Do not post entire articles in the body or in the comments.

Links must be to the original source, not an aggregator like Google Amp, MSN, or Yahoo.

Example:

  1. Articles must be relevant to politics. Links must be to quality and original content. Articles should be worth reading. Clickbait, stub articles, and rehosted or stolen content are not allowed. Check your source for Reliability and Bias here.
  2. Be civil, No violations of TOS. It’s OK to say the subject of an article is behaving like a (pejorative, pejorative). It’s NOT OK to say another USER is (pejorative). Strong language is fine, just not directed at other members. Engage in good-faith and with respect! This includes accusing another user of being a bot or paid actor. Trolling is uncivil and is grounds for removal and/or a community ban.
  3. No memes, trolling, or low-effort comments. Reposts, misinformation, off-topic, trolling, or offensive. Similarly, if you see posts along these lines, do not engage. Report them, block them, and live a happier life than they do. We see too many slapfights that boil down to "Mom! He's bugging me!" and "I'm not touching you!" Going forward, slapfights will result in removed comments and temp bans to cool off.
  4. Vote based on comment quality, not agreement. This community aims to foster discussion; please reward people for putting effort into articulating their viewpoint, even if you disagree with it.
  5. No hate speech, slurs, celebrating death, advocating violence, or abusive language. This will result in a ban. Usernames containing racist, or inappropriate slurs will be banned without warning

We ask that the users report any comment or post that violate the rules, to use critical thinking when reading, posting or commenting. Users that post off-topic spam, advocate violence, have multiple comments or posts removed, weaponize reports or violate the code of conduct will be banned.

All posts and comments will be reviewed on a case-by-case basis. This means that some content that violates the rules may be allowed, while other content that does not violate the rules may be removed. The moderators retain the right to remove any content and ban users.

That's all the rules!

I didn't really need another reason to dislike cryptobros, but I'll add it to my quiver nonetheless.

They've REALLY been coming out of the woodwork around here since Trump went to their conference and individually jerked each one of them off with all kinds of stupid promises that he's incapable of keeping. The same thing that has broken their brain and refuses to lets them see crypto for what it is also just let them live on complete and utter bullshit as long as it gives them hope they'll eventually make money.

It's not even that I dislike them just because they're into crypto. I could deal with that.

It's that they take something terrible and base their whole personalities around it and ...yep, that's exactly what Trump supporters do. lol

(And I'm aware of the irony here in that my username and avatar are based on an obscure Star Trek character 😆.)

“Hey, fellow cryptobros, nobody takes us seriously! Let’s back Trump! They’ll definitely respect us then!”

[–] Zakkull@lemmy.world 3 points 3 months ago (1 children)

Unironically the maga crowd WILL respect them for that. Its a good time to invest in crypto so you can dump it right before election.

[–] magnetosphere@fedia.io 2 points 3 months ago

Ordinarily I don’t give a damn what the maga crowd respects, but that’s some solid investment advice!

Here's my uneducated theory: The "investor class" in society have been freaking out and become desperate due to global technological innovation not making the same progress as it did through the 80's to the 2000's. Rich people without jobs were really expecting something that would have as much (if not more) of an impact on consumer society as the smart phone.

Look, the entire community sucks, but there really is a distinct difference between "crypto people" and "Bitcoiners".

Crypto people are constantly chasing pump-and-dump schemes hoping to get in early enough to make a profit. It's an overly complicated, overly risky, and exhausting way to gamble. These are the people that push Web3 and NFTs and want to Blockchain everything.

Bitcoiners are techno-libertarians who think Satoshi Nakamoto's Bitcoin is the digital version of gold. They don't care about anything else. Litecoin usually gets a pass, but anything else, especially Ethereum-based tokens, are absolutely hated.

Now, you'd think you'd like Bitcoiners more than Crypto people, just because they aren't enthusiastic about the most enshittifying parts of cryptocurrency like NFTs, but don't forget, these are still libertarians. They are deeply fascist, and their communities usually have the same vibe as /pol/.

Take a trip into Nostr (Bitcoiner Twitter) and you'll find no shortage of Neo-Nazi memes and child porn...

The firearm world has the same problem. There are firearm enthusiasts who aren't 2A, NRA-sticker extremists, but they're a minority.

Satoshi's objectives are still admirable. It's unfortunate that Bitcoin was based on POW, which have turned out to have strong negative ecological impacts; and there was a hard miss in the design WRT anonymity, but the concept - which you aptly summarized as digital gold - was a good thing.

This just feels like a bunch of tech bros found an excuse to vote for the fascist convicted felon/rapist without saying the quiet part too loudly. Like, they have to know the fascists won't allow anything unregulated by them to exist if they take power, right?
