MODERATORS

Right now the user count Lemmys is comparatively tiny when held up against reddit - but the user count isn't the thing that makes a social media site, it's the engagement

So even if you're used to lurking, try to get a little more active! Post memes, vote on posts, talk in the comments, whatever!

If people come here and see activity, content, and discussions, they're more likely to stay and contribute their own - if they come and see a ghost town, they'll just go back to reddit

Watch me engage with someone

[–] Extrawurst@feddit.de 1 points 1 year ago (1 children)

It’s a bit difficult getting into Lemmy and the feediverse I gotta say. But after looking around for a while I really like how things work here, compared to reddit

I started using Mastodon a couple if years ago; didn't stay for long but it definitely felt more...friendly than Reddit, or personal I suppose. Glad I found Lemmy though I love the message board/forum format way better than a Twitter like format that Mastodon seems to have, though I do like both

[–] Extrawurst@feddit.de 0 points 1 year ago

Yea the twitter way of doing it feels more like yelling in a room filled with people, trying to be the loudest. The message board/forum feels more like discussions. But to each his own I guess

I think I've been more active on Lemmy in the past five days than I had been on reddit for the past 2 years.

Decentralization of social media is extremely enticing to me, and I really want this community to flourish, so I've been trying to make this into an active space.

[–] nathanpc@lemmy.ml 1 points 1 year ago

I won't lie, if you look at my Reddit profile you'll see that I've commented more here in the last couple of days than probably the last 3 years on Reddit. The community just feels more welcome and I feel as if my comment will get read instead of being drowned out as it happens on Reddit.

I'll post my puppy everyone likes puppies.

[–] secret300@lemmy.sdf.org 1 points 1 month ago (1 children)

I try but I rarely post. I did seem to kinda revive the !beeandpuppycat@lemm.ee community so that's dope. I hope people keep posting there.

Already did hehehe

Interesting, I see you did on the lemmy.ca and not LW. I'm not the biggest LW fan myself, but that community has a much wider range than the lemmy.ca one

[–] DawnOfRiku@lemmy.world 1 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Honestly, I feel more comfortable participating on Lemmy than I ever did on Reddit or Twitter.

[–] mattchu_c@lemmy.world 0 points 1 year ago (1 children)

I agree. This place appears to be more inviting and friendly. I'm not worried that I'm going to make a spelling mistake and never hear the end of it

[–] sparklingsquirrel@feddit.de 0 points 1 year ago

I feel you. On Reddit I was always afraid to get 1000 of comments telling me I'm stupid or how could I do xyz. I really like it here on Lemmy, everyone is just so welcoming and not at all mad that so many of us (former) Redditors are joining.

Made an account 22 hours ago, been lurking around here and there, finally decided to post my first comment after reading this post. I'd like to get more involved, just trying to find my footing first. Speaking of - what app(s) is everyone using? I'm on Android, and just logged into Jerboa. Decent UI, not a fan of the flashing screen during transitions. Any recommendations on other apps? Thanks.

I’m using Firefox on mobile. A dedicated app would be cool but the web experience is really nice, much better than reddit’s mobile site.

[–] llii@feddit.de 0 points 1 year ago

Im too using Firefox (on iOS). Even if it’s not comparable to a native app, it’s quite nice.

I feel reminded of the old days of the internet. It is invigorating discovering this Fediverse. Everything feels a lot more engaged than Reddit. I think it may be a good thing if this does not "take off" completely.

[–] paperclip@lemmy.ca 0 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago) (1 children)

definitely agree, though the way that lemmy isn't overseen by a single entity would likely mitigate some of the negative effects in my opinion. but there's definitely a sweet spot between inactive and dead communities and ones which are too active, in a way i tend to not be a fan of (thinking of mainstream subs like r/funny and r/askreddit's quality drop). in any case though, if an instance you're in gets too mainstream for your liking, you can just hop over to a new, smaller instance/community and join local groups they have there for similar interests ¯\(ツ)

[–] solidstate@feddit.de 0 points 1 year ago

Yes, I am intrigued how this will turn out. I think I see potential in the federated approach in this regard.

[–] Senseibull@lemmy.ml 0 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Welcome to a better future everyone.

Me rn -

Yo, your fingers are whack

We also need more mobile clients like this one

Do you mean healthy competition?

[–] youju@feddit.de 0 points 1 year ago

I'm doing my part! Yes

[–] inntee@feddit.de 0 points 1 year ago

Hi all, another Reddit refugee here. Glad to see communities forming!!

[–] Dave_r@feddit.de 0 points 1 year ago

Huh. So that's how you comment!

[–] NewBrainWhoThis@lemmy.world 0 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Much of the meme content is in the form of GIF and as fare as I see, Lemmy does not support uploading GIFs. Will this format be supported in the near future?

[–] Senseibull@lemmy.ml 1 points 1 year ago (1 children)

You can hyperlink to them, see my Rick and Morty gif a few comments above, i didnt upload that.

[–] NewBrainWhoThis@lemmy.world 0 points 1 year ago (1 children)

undefined> Senseibull@lemmy.ml

Hmm ... that's all I can see in Firefox... (its fresh install btw.) I have to check the mobile app if it shows up there. But even in the meme communities I only see GIFs sometimes in the comments but not in the posts

[–] Siphalor@feddit.de 1 points 1 year ago

I recently noticed that this is actually a bug that's been fixed four days ago (Github).
Until your instance of Lemmy updates, you'll have to open the post or comment on the original instance using the rainbow button above the comment. GIFs already work on the same site that you post them on.

[–] baal@feddit.de 0 points 1 year ago (2 children)

Trying hard! What I'd need is a browser extension (Firefox) that just sends me to the fediverse as soon as I type "old.reddit.com" into the address bar to kill some time. Old habits die hard.

[–] baal@feddit.de 0 points 1 year ago

Nice! Thanks everyone. I'll be trying the redirector addon the next few days. Noticed something cool. On this post we've got interaction from at least 4 different federated lemmys

  • feddit.de
  • lemmy.ml
  • kbin.social
  • beehaw.org

I quite like this new world.

[–] Rhabuko@feddit.de 0 points 1 year ago

I agree. It already helps if you comment under stuff that you liked. Pushes the good content up to the top and it will be more visible for others.

[–] Lemmington@sopuli.xyz 0 points 1 year ago (1 children)

I just feel like I have nothing interesting to say:(

[–] Rhabuko@feddit.de 0 points 1 year ago

You don't have to say something genius. As someone who posts memes. I love it when people tell me that they liked it. It helps to push my content up and the more people comment, the more likely you get nice conversations. But nobody will force you to comment, so no panic 😉

I wanna see more hot takes in the gaming community. Let's get some arguments going people. Tell me what popular game is overrated garbage

[–] setInner234@feddit.de 0 points 1 year ago

Another lurker here. Been well over a decade and this is the first time I feel like contributing again. Really hope the fediverse catches on this time.

[–] eighty@lemmy.one 0 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Posting memes always seemed so easy until you have to do it lmao

[–] Makussu@feddit.de 0 points 1 year ago

Same. I just have no meme ideas when i need them
