Well, technically the whole game is optional.

Technically life is also optional, just throw a toaster in the tub and get it over with.

But it's kind of a moot point to make because most of us still feel like we have some goal in life that we aspire towards. Similarly most games also have a goal and if you want to reach that defined ending then there are certain parts of the game that you have to complete, hence them being mandatory. When it comes to bosses like the Nameless king beating him isn't a requirement to finishing the game (compare to the soul of cinder whom you have to beat to get the endings), thus the boss is not mandatory and is instead optional.

My serious answer is that people like games which "reward exploration" but you can't have real exploration without the possibility of missing something.

You need to have optional areas to reward exploration, but that's not the equivalent of "the whole game is optional". Even BotW where 99% of the game is completely optional you and everyone else still have to complete the following steps: activate the first tower, clear 4 shrines, talk to the king, kill Ganon. Minecraft for example is an "everything is optional" game and plenty of people would argue it's less of a game and more of a pure sandbox because you have to set your own goals and do your own thing and you're done when you don't feel like playing anymore. You can't "finish" Minecraft.

A game designer will always need to create some mandatory parts if they want the game to have an end state beyond "you died". Mandatory parts don't invalidate exploration except when "everything" is mandatory.

Midra is such a cool fight. Fuck the optional Huge ass dlc dragons which all have way to much hp tho

Idk, Bayle is totally worth going out of your way to sidestep Senessax.

[–] groucho@lemmy.sdf.org 13 points 3 months ago (1 children)

I can't overstate how awesome Dragon's Peak was for me. Riding up the side of a mountain, jumping from peak to peak, red lightning crashing everywhere, climbing over entire mountains of dead dragons. And the payoff, the Bayle fight, was easily my favorite dragon in the whole game. Even better than Placidusax. It was like playing a Dio album. 10/10, give whoever worked on that bit a raise.

I agree the build up and Dragons peak was really cool. I just did not enjoy the fight itself. I would have liked a lock-on point further down his body, so I could enjoy more of the spectacular show that was laid bare before me

[–] groucho@lemmy.sdf.org 5 points 3 months ago (1 children)

I ended up turning the lock off for most of it.

[–] red@sopuli.xyz 2 points 3 months ago (1 children)

That alone makes it anything but 10/10

[–] groucho@lemmy.sdf.org 3 points 3 months ago

Eh, I'm used to it at this point. Something flies out of the screen? Unlock and pan around. Re-target if I need to when it lands.

He’s easy to cheese on Torrent if you don’t feel like fighting.

I have some heathen friends that only play the mainline, can you imagine!?!?!? What has the world come to :(

[–] dditty@lemm.ee 8 points 3 months ago

Nameless King was such an awesome fight. Such a cool area and lore

[–] Ultraviolet@lemmy.world 7 points 3 months ago

I'm convinced Elden Ring, until very late in development, required all 6 Great Runes to access the capital. It feels very strange for that much to be optional, both in terms of gameplay and lore, it was probably just thought to be unreasonably long in testing.

I found this years ago when someone edited the site. One of my favorite DSs, although kinda hated that boss.

[–] The_Picard_Maneuver@lemmy.world 1 points 3 months ago (1 children)

The lore behind this boss is intense.

[–] BreadOven@lemmy.world 2 points 3 months ago

I think it goes even deeper than the nameless king.
