Mark Carney led the Liberals to a narrow victory on Monday in an election dominated by issues like affordability, tariffs and annexation threats from U.S. President Donald Trump.

CTV News is declaring the Liberals have won enough seats in the 45th federal election to form a minority government.

As of 11:00 p.m EDT, the Liberals had won or were leading in 156 out of 343 ridings. Pierre Poilievre’s Conservatives are set to remain in opposition, with 144 ridings so far. Parties need 172 seats to form a majority.

Please give me just enough new dems to get things passed. I wanted a lib majority, but if it's a minority give them enough new dems to work with.

Still seems up in the air. Just looking at the current numbers from CBC, the NDP is only slated to take 8 seats, so it seems like BQ is going to be the one with the cards, assuming the tides don't suddenly shift.

They have enough for a majority with just libs and ndp as of right now, but we'll see what the morning brings

[–] jellygoose@lemmy.ca 8 points 4 days ago

It’s libs + bloc.

Quebec helped deliver more liberal seats than anywhere else in the country. They will have to govern and respect the province which as a québécois is a win for me. That and not being stuck with a small pp.

I wanted a lib majority,

Why though?

[–] Jhex@lemmy.world 13 points 4 days ago (1 children)

because the opposition is currently maple maga and they'll shut down the cure for cancer to own the libs

[–] NoneOfUrBusiness@fedia.io 9 points 4 days ago (2 children)

I mean it's natural to not want a conservative government, but why root for a liberal majority and not a liberal minority with progressive parties to provide the remaining seats?

[–] cheese_greater@lemmy.world 9 points 4 days ago

This is honestly the way until there's a better electoral system. Majority governments are not a great thing for the people

[–] Jhex@lemmy.world -1 points 4 days ago (1 children)

I just explained why. Current conservatives are saboteurs, not opposition

[–] NoneOfUrBusiness@fedia.io 1 points 4 days ago (1 children)

What does that have to do with the Greens, NPD or Bloc though?

[–] Jhex@lemmy.world 2 points 4 days ago (1 children)

Nothing, but they couldn't form the opposition

This minority arrangement is fine as the libs can work with the NDP or the BQ, but if the balance were held by the cons, they'd sink Canada to make the libs look bad

So you're suffering for something that didn't happen... Got it.

[–] Jhex@lemmy.world 1 points 4 days ago

who says I'm suffering anything, I'm just explaining my thought process based on actual examples that did happen. I still remember the invasion of Ottawa by the clownvoy and how pp cheered them on to make Trudeau look worse
