I was going to ask "What about Diddy?", but it seems that they tweaked the mechanics a bit, to give Mario a second state (small vs. big) instead of having two characters. This wouldn't work with DKC2 since Diddy and Dixie have different abilities (you can only enter some barrels with either, Diddy is faster, Dixie glides), but for DKC1 this looks fun.
I'm downloading this now. Worth reading the release docs, as they explain quite a bit of changes done.

Make sure to apply the patch to a USA v1.0 ROM. European ROMs and further versions don't work.

I keep trying to roll against the enemies, but Mario doesn't roll.
I don't recognise the music being used in the bonuses. Is this from Zelda? The music in Coral Capers (the water stage) is the same as SMW's water levels though.
The shortcut between Coral Capers and Funky's Flight still works!
I'm sure with some creative thought you can get around it without needing luigi or yoshi as standalone characters.
Mario in this ROMHack has the fire flower ability, so gliding ability from Dixie could be shown as Mario with the Tanooki suit or the cape.
Perhaps implementing something similar in spirit to Super Mario World's item storage? Then you can switch back and forth between cape and fire flower forms. The fire flower is functional in the hack, just like Yoshi. (Seeing Yoshi eating a whole Klump is a sight to behold.)
I like that idea!
