You can tell it's a fake story because the cops are actually looking for clues and going through camera footage instead of just saying "tough luck".

Depends, if OP's aunt lived in an affluent enough area, they'll be looking.
100% cops DO NOT like opening misdemeanor cases ever. It hurts their felony conviction rate that gets them all their raises and promotions.
