Technically it is set during Christmas, but it's not about Christmas. But a movie tons of people like to watch at Christmastime is a Christmas movie.

It has Christmas music in the soundtrack, the b plot is about family mending, and it takes place during a Christmas party.

Yeah but IMO those trappings don't make it a Christmas movie. Die Hard is an action movie people like to watch around Christmas, which is all a movie needs to make it a Christmas movie. I mean there's porn that features Santa's naughty elves, but nobody watches it to get into the Christmas spirit.

You might not, but it doesn't mean other people don't. Elf is a Christmas themed family movie the same way Die Hard is a Christmas themed action movie.

Saying that first line as someone who has written some holiday themed smut before.
