Rules (2024-08-30)
- This is an English-language community. Comments should be in English. Posts can link to non-English news sources when providing a full-text translation in the post description. Automated translations are fine, as long as they don't overly distort the content.
- No links to misinformation or commercial advertising. When you post outdated/historic articles, add the year of publication to the post title. Infographics must include a source and a year of creation; if possible, also provide a link to the source.
- Be kind to each other, and argue in good faith. Don't post direct insults nor disrespectful and condescending comments. Don't troll nor incite hatred. Don't look for novel argumentation strategies at Wikipedia's List of fallacies.
- No bigotry, sexism, racism, antisemitism, dehumanization of minorities, or glorification of National Socialism.
- Be the signal, not the noise: Strive to post insightful comments. Add "/s" when you're being sarcastic (and don't use it to break rule no. 3).
- If you link to paywalled information, please provide also a link to a freely available archived version. Alternatively, try to find a different source.
- Light-hearted content, memes, and posts about your European everyday belong in !yurop@lemm.ee. (They're cool, you should subscribe there too!)
- Don't evade bans. If we notice ban evasion, that will result in a permanent ban for all the accounts we can associate with you.
- No posts linking to speculative reporting about ongoing events with unclear backgrounds. Please wait at least 12 hours. (E.g., do not post breathless reporting on an ongoing terror attack.)
(This list may get expanded when necessary.)
We will use some leeway to decide whether to remove a comment.
If need be, there are also bans: 3 days for lighter offenses, 14 days for bigger offenses, and permanent bans for people who don't show any willingness to participate productively. If we think the ban reason is obvious, we may not specifically write to you.
If you want to protest a removal or ban, feel free to write privately to the mods: @federalreverse@feddit.org, @poVoq@slrpnk.net, or @anzo@programming.dev.

Blatant hypocrisy
Because? If the Chinese government subsidizes companies, which in turn turn around and use this advantage to undercut and bankrupt European businesses, it is naive to believe this behavior will change by itself if it has not done so by now.
Instead the CCP ramped up this behavior in strategic branches.
Yeah I know the EU is just as adamant on the free market as the US as long as it doesn’t concern themselves. This statement has been accurate for more than 100 years. They subsidise, the Chinese subsidise, and still Chinese cars sold in Europe are still way more expensive than in China itself. It’s laughable to just blindly repeat all the government lines.
Yeah, all cars are taxed steeply in the EU. Chinese cars just like European made and American made. Normally all cars are just taxed based on sales price. .. all the same
So?
You made the point Chinese cars are more expensive in the EU than they are in china. I told you part of the reason why.. then there is shipping.. eu dealer markup... And Chinese cars are cheaper because the makers get heavily subsidised, giving them an unfair edge over their competitors. The goal is to buy market share and break competition. The EU asked the companies to open their books to show this was incorrect, the companies chose not to comply. Thus tarrifs to take away the unfair advantage.
Yes, and don't forget forced labour, there are slave-like working conditions across the supply chain as there is no transparency.
This hasn’t been stated as a reason for the duties, has it?
Blatent hypocrisy of China. They do not allow the same access to their domestic markets that they demand from every other country.
They expect the world to open their wallets to them while they spit in their faces by supporting Russia's imperialistic war in Ukraine, prop up North Korea, ignore international law and try to claim land that clearly isn't theirs, lied to the world about COVID, and are actively building for war with Taiwan. Chinese behavior is showing they should not be placated and given free access to markets.
It's a shame because Chinese people are smart and hard working. Just sucks their country is so misguided.
