Gearboxes are amazing! Unfortunately they've had really hard time competing with derailleur because of pedalling efficiency :(

Also price is so high that lot of people who'd want low maintenance system, wouldn't be able to afford it

For ebikes it makes more sense because the efficiency isn't as big a deal with the assist if you ask me.
