Say what you like about Gaddafi - his cruelty, his nepotism, his incompetence, his vanity, his sheer vileness - but at least he knew how to roll like an over-the-top Bond villain. Our wannabe dictator can't even handle that much.
I highly recommend the Behind the Bastards episode(s?) about Gaddafi. Some of the funniest. Dude just ineptly YOLO'd himself into dictatorship and being maybe the richest guy on the planet.
I mean, Libya was still better off with him than with warring factions
Yep, likewise, Saddam was a cunt but he killed three times fewer civilians than our war of terror did.
That's not an argument in defense of despots, that's an argument against profit-motivated colonialism.
Wow, all those dead Iranians and Kurds will be thrilled to hear they didn't exist.
Fair point
I'll never understanding playing apologist for dictators.
What about condemning military action in foreign countries for monetary gains?
At first I was going to write up a long thing about how unjustified the Iraq War was and how we never should've invaded, but then I realized you responded to the Libya comment chain. You do realize that Libya was in the midst of a revolution and that the UN authorized a coalition imposing a no-fly zone over the country, right?
I remember it as it happened. It was mostly an European affair, pushed by the french who were losing oil access in the country. They decided to side against Gheddafi, despite all the efforts from Berlusconi who was a friend of Gheddafi's (yeah it's a bit disgusting) and wanted to protect Eni's budding interests in Libya.
The no fly zone helped the (UAE-backed) rebels and hindered Gheddafi, they even put up sanctions.
NATO didn't go to Libya with humanitarian intentions, if there weren't fossil fuels in the country, they'd still be under the Carlos Santana lookalike.
