I used a paper straw once, it fucking melted in my drink because paper doesn't work well with liquids

[–] Mr_Blott@feddit.uk 38 points 3 months ago (2 children)

I remember when Maccas stopped using straws in France.

They just printed on the cup - "We've stopped using plastic straws. To drink, remove lid. You're not an infant"

Don't suppose that'd work in a country of insufferable crybabies though lol

[–] yokonzo@lemmy.world 6 points 3 months ago (3 children)

You think every American alive can't handle drinking without a straw?

[–] MuffinHeeler@aussie.zone 2 points 3 months ago (1 children)

Americans like ice in all their drinks. Straws are way better when there's ice. For the rest of the world it's no problem to drink from a cup.

[–] Mr_Blott@feddit.uk -3 points 3 months ago (1 children)

I'm trying to imagine someone thinking that only yanks like ice in their drinks and that the other 7 billion+ people haven't discovered ice or something, and it's quite funny

[–] saltbaby@lemmy.today 2 points 3 months ago* (last edited 3 months ago)

It is quite an American staple. That's one thing I hear from my friends who have visited the states, that they like ice in everything.

Edit: also that's not what they said at all, what kinda trip are you on

[–] pingveno@lemmy.world 1 points 3 months ago (1 children)

This is actually a legit concern for some people with handicaps. That said, the number of people that just get handed a straw as a matter of course far outnumbers the number that needs it because of handicaps. And of course carrying your own around is a thing.

[–] spongebue@lemmy.world 0 points 3 months ago (1 children)

It's a fair point that some people would need a straw to drink, but I don't think it's entirely unfair to expect them to have a reusable straw or something in preparation. Certainly it seems more reasonable than having the remaining 99% of the population default to having a straw, especially when they probably don't use one at home anyway.

[–] pingveno@lemmy.world 1 points 3 months ago

I 100% agree. At the very least, I don't think it should be the default expectation that people use and discard a straw with every meal, regardless of what it's made of. Personally, I have three metal straws. One is a plain straight one, one has a bend in the end, and the last one is collapsible.

[–] Mr_Blott@feddit.uk 1 points 3 months ago (1 children)

Try printing that on a cup in the US and see what happens

[–] yokonzo@lemmy.world 1 points 3 months ago (2 children)

People freaked out when cups didn't say "Merry Christmas", I think you have too much faith in people.

[–] FinalRemix@lemmy.world 3 points 3 months ago

The way covid was handled should have long eroded any faith in people.

No seriously, the amount of stupid remarks I hear coming from Europeans is insane, "Americans why do you not have healthcare, if you guys just changed your policies you would be fine, you all love guns and policies that make life a living hell."

No dumbass, I have no control over my government and not every single American gets pissy over little things because we're not a hive mind.

That's like saying every Frenchman riots and is a good lover, it happens but clearly that's not the case.

[–] Lightor@lemmy.world 0 points 3 months ago (1 children)

I mean we do have control, we vote.

Also, having health care for all isn't a "little thing", it can make or break lives...

[–] yokonzo@lemmy.world 3 points 3 months ago* (last edited 3 months ago) (1 children)

I'm talking about the straw thing he was on about. That "little thing"

And I honestly think the amount of power our vote is a joke. Between the corrupt gerrymandering politicians and the corporate lobbyists, the average person has little say in our society.

If our vote mattered my generation wouldn't be struggling to buy food and pay rent for the past decade

[–] Mr_Blott@feddit.uk -3 points 3 months ago (2 children)

Really long way of saying "We're too cowardly and selfish to get off our fat arses and do something about it, like the french do"

Lol

[–] yokonzo@lemmy.world 3 points 3 months ago* (last edited 3 months ago) (2 children)

There you go again, lumping all Americans together. You do realize our country is much larger right? I'm sure it's so simple and easy over in France but over here things are a bit more complicated. We kind of have to struggle over here.

Kind of seems like I'm explaining to a brick wall though

[–] hydrospanner@lemmy.world 4 points 3 months ago

Kind of seems like I'm explaining to a brick wall though.

Don't besmirch brick walls like that!

While equally dense, they'd have lasted longer against the Germans.

[–] Mr_Blott@feddit.uk -3 points 3 months ago (1 children)

lumping all Americans together

We kind of have to struggle

Er, yeah, that's how you can change things. Instead of individualism, division and selfishness, lump yourselves together and do something for your fellows instead of whining about your own problems. The French have a motto they live by.

Liberté, égalité, fraternité.

Liberté (that's freedom. Actual freedom, not your fake one)

Égalité (That's equality. It's being eroded a bit now, but they're doing their best to fight against it, by believing in)

Fraternité (Basically brotherhood. Not being an individual, selfish or a coward, but standing up for what's right for your fellow citizens, not just what's right for your little clique)

[–] yokonzo@lemmy.world 4 points 3 months ago* (last edited 3 months ago)

Okay, you're right, well done.

They cut the heads off the rich, of course they are!

[–] Swedneck@discuss.tchncs.de 18 points 3 months ago (3 children)

They work fine, what you encountered was a cheapo shitty paper straw.

proper ones are quite thick, more like a cardboard tube, and will start to go sliiiiightly soft when your drink is finished anyways.

[–] nBodyProblem@lemmy.world 6 points 3 months ago* (last edited 2 months ago)

I have tried the ones you are describing and they’re still shit. At that point, just skip the dang straw and design your cups to work well without.

The most annoying thing is most places giving out paper straws still put their iced coffee in a big plastic cup.

[–] netvor@lemmy.world 4 points 3 months ago

Every one I ever had was shit.

Metal ones work great for me, but paper? Come on, I'd rather have no straw at all. It's just more junk, more CO2.

[–] hydrospanner@lemmy.world 2 points 3 months ago

Every single paper straw I've ever used has been awful, and has significantly diminished my enjoyment of my drink.

While it is a small thing, I have on multiple occasions not bought a drink when I otherwise might have, because it was going to have to use a paper straw.

Of all the places where we can reduce plastic usage, the humble straw is a horrible place to start.

[–] sin_free_for_00_days@sopuli.xyz 4 points 3 months ago (2 children)

Were you drinking hot coffee or something? I've used those wax covered weird things a couple times and didn't have a problem with them. I would just rather not even use a straw really.

[–] TassieTosser@aussie.zone 1 points 3 months ago

I've had paper straws turn to mush in my milkshake.

[–] HawlSera@lemm.ee 1 points 3 months ago

I was drinking Cheerwine

[–] explodicle@sh.itjust.works 2 points 3 months ago

I just carry around a silicone straw. It's also useful for various drug things, MacGyvering stuff, etc.
