I thought Sokka and Katara’s last name was “of the southern water tribe”. That’s how he introduced himself a few times anyway.
I mean that's how a lot of last names were created.
Like Leonardo da Vinci. Leonardo of Vinci.
Same with certain professions. Butcher, Shoemaker, Sawyer, etc.
