From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Linux is a family of open source Unix-like operating systems based on the Linux kernel, an operating system kernel first released on September 17, 1991 by Linus Torvalds. Linux is typically packaged in a Linux distribution (or distro for short).

Distributions include the Linux kernel and supporting system software and libraries, many of which are provided by the GNU Project. Many Linux distributions use the word "Linux" in their name, but the Free Software Foundation uses the name GNU/Linux to emphasize the importance of GNU software, causing some controversy.

gcc will get installed as part of the build-essential package that @ksynwa@lemmy.ml listed. And gcc should get called automatically by the make-command.
So, you actually don't have to do a manual step to put gcc somewhere.

Did you run those commands? Did it work?

I tried doing make it gives me an error. Also (if you have downloaded the file checked it out), if I do "sudo make install" even with the GCC compiler installed, it still does not work.

why don't you show or tell what this error is? people cannot telepathically know what is going wrong there.

/home/uname/Downloads/mt7603_v1.16/os/linux

this looks like a completely different driver than the one you posted in your top comment. In which folder did you run this?

[–] ksynwa@lemmy.ml 0 points 2 years ago (1 children)

Is this for make or make install?

also i found this while trying to figure out what i had to do, it's a portion of it: https://pastebin.com/arbeKVvr

Are you sure your adapter does not work out of the box? Ubuntu seems to have the driver for it already at:

/usr/lib/firmware/mt7601u.bin

Maybe you can try sudo modprobe mt7601u and see if that makes it work.

[–] Helix@feddit.de 0 points 2 years ago

That's the firmware, not the driver.

The driver seems to be the Ralink rt2870sta.

Even Debian, which is fairly restrictive, has a way easier process to load the firmware with the Kernel driver: https://wiki.debian.org/rt2870sta
