I'm making my way through DS9 for the first time (almost finished with season two). For reference, I've seen TOG, TNG, all the new movies, Discovery, Lower Decks, and SNW. DS9 season one was a little slow to pick up, but my husband and I are loving season two. As always, Star Trek addresses a lot of hard hitting issues in very nuanced ways. It's also great continuously seeing fantastic representation in even older episodes (mainly women and people of colour in prominent and varied positions).

But when we get to more women specific issues, things are seriously lacking. Basically, almost any scene with the Ferengis interacting with women are problematic. I understand that they are a highly misogynistic race, but my discomfort and annoyance is with how others react to them. The Grand Nagus sexually assaulting women, especially Kira, is never actually fully addressed. It's just seen as an annoyance to be put up with. Quark is often seen as aggressively pursuing women, often with unwanted touches and other advances. Even if it's at first the women in question is disinterested, they relent in some way, either completely or they tell him something flattering/of chances in the future. Thankfully, so far, none of the main women characters have given into his advances, but it's common for one off and guest characters to somehow be "charmed" by him, even those from more egalitarian civilizations (eg: Vulcan).

I know DS9 was made prior to #MeToo, but it's still worth pointing out where Star Trek can and have improved (thankfully newer Trek has less of these issues), and when some of the portrayals in the past are rather inconsistent with the philosophies of the Federation. Of course, the Federation operates with a level of cultural relativism, but it still doesn't make sense to me how the Grand Nagus (and Ferengis in general) were allowed to assault and harass those outside of their culture/species on an interstellar, multi-cutural, Federation run space station. Star Trek in the 90s was trying to a lot of good, but watching it now, there's definitely quite a few aspects that are unsatisfying.

Just in case you didn't know ... she's on mastodon, has probably been here longer than you, and is active (she once actually replied to me!!!!!).

I’ve been watching TNG for the first time and so far season 1 has been hit or miss. Ether a episode will be really good or really bad. So far I think episode 23 is a really good episode! I hope that Tasha isn’t actually dead. I liked her and thought she was a gorgeous woman! This is the one and only time I will ever want spoilers but is she fully dead or does she return?

I know it's been done to death all over the internet but not here yet!

If you could choose any actor or actress to be in Star Trek who would you choose?

I recently saw that Nic Cage said he was a Trekkie and I'd absolutely love it if he played an insane alien villain of some sort for an episode or two. Get him in star trek legacy as a crazy ferenghi or something.

I posted this on r/startrek yesterday, but I've moved to Lemmy now.

This place has roughly 3,000 people and was intended to be an entire replacement for DaystromInstitute and StarTrek as they were going dark indefinitely. Well, within 4 days the moderators have walked back those statements and opened both subreddits up. I see no incentive for people to come to this website now and while a few may come here in the future, most people will go to r/startrek with 600,000 people.

Who is inspired to make an LCARS theme for this sub??

One of the wonderful things about lemmy/free and open source software like this is that nobody would be forced to use an LCARS theme, under settings a user can change what theme they want lemmy to display in. So... really we can go all out here!

I provided a link to some lemmy themes to give people an idea of the possibilities.

(I am not an admin or anything here, of course the people running startrek.website would need to agree to install the theme on the server side but I figured I would throw the idea out there!)

I'm watching "Heart of Stone" 3x14 and in this frame from the final scene in Quark's bar, you can see a random Jem'hadar chilling at the bar. that's a pretty major goof, right? this early in the show at least

For those of you here who think the prime directive is flawed, or could be adjusted.

What do you agree with, how would you change what you disagree with, and why?

What it says on the tin, really. I think this is going to be an issue when they get around to the smaller communities... It's going to suck majorly, as most people's default will remain with reddit for community discussion like this...

A note about episode discussions on startrek.website

Right now, the plan is to post the /c/startrek discussion when the episode drops on Thursdays. Once the global community has had some time to watch and digest what they've seen, the /c/daystrominstitute discussion will go live on Sundays for a more in-depth analysis. This is subject to change as we evaluate what works best for the community as a whole.

nuqneH!

Welcome to our new home in the Fed~~eration~~iverse. First of all- WOW we did not expect to surpass 300 users on this instance (and over 1K fediverse subscribers) within our first 48 hours and with little promotional effort. We are all excited to see where this long road goes.

Coming from Reddit and confused about Lemmy?

I had some stuff typed out, but honestly, this thread sums it up better. Check it out! It has infographics.

If you're still stressed out, remember that Lemmy is still new. Yes, it's ugly, but people said Reddit was ugly too (both are correct). As Lemmy grows, and #Rexxit continues, more tools will get made. Decentralization opens up a lot of possibilities we didn't have before. The future is bright.

Will other communities be setting up shop besides StarTrek, DaystromInstitute and Risa?

Yes! Eventually. Right now our focus is staying online, fast, and reliable which means keeping things focused while we find our footing. Daystrom, StarTrek and Risa were chosen to start off with because the three of them cover the "srs bsns ↔ shitposting" spread quite well.

If you are part of a community interested in being hosted on startrek.website, send me a DM and we can try to work something out.

Qapla'! How can I support?

We've started a Patreon here: Patreon.com/treksite. There's only one plan and it's just $4. If our growth continues like it has, we're going to need to upgrade our hosting very soon.

What's up with the "unencrypted DMs" warning?

I feel like I'm not seeing everything. What gives?

Lemmy is weird with languages. In your user settings, make sure “Language” is set to both “English” and “Undetermined”. You can select additional languages as well, but they aren’t currently allowed on this server. On desktop, you can use CTRL+click to select both options. This will allow you to see content for which the author has not set a language, and content which has been set to “English”.

This will hopefully be made more clear with future updates.

Thumbnails acting weird/not showing up (for users on another instance)?

Add this exception to your adblocker (replace "lemmy.world" with your instance):

Where can I find official server updates?

Follow us on Mastodon for updates, scheduled maintenance, etc.

Where can I talk with Trekkies about non-Trek stuff?

We've just opened a new "offtopic" community, welcome to !quarks@startrek.website, Quarks is fun!

Do you guys have any recommendations where to get all the pieces of StarTrek ? Netflix nor Amazon has it in their portfolio...

I will assume we're all familiar with one of the popular gripes/issues with Voyager and no, for once - it's not a Tuvix thread.

Today we're defending the torpedo/shuttle count.

In many of the discussions on this topic (especially regarding the torpedoes) key context is often ignored or otherwise not mentioned.

So let's start with said Torpedoes.

The line about Voyager not being able to replace their 38 (of a total 123 fired over the series) torpedoes once they're gone was in 'The Cloud', the fifth episode of the series.

At this point in the series Janeway was (as established in the conversation about Torres' Starfleet procedure breaching dilithium refinery in the previous episode) reluctant to step outside of Starfleet procedures. Especially I would imagine for the purposes of replicating antimatter based weaponry for obvious explosion related reasons.

Voyager was also hesitant to trade technology at this stage, a policy that clearly was relaxed as the truly dire reality of their situation was realised - evidenced by them giving holo technology to the Hirogen amongst various other trades (successful, or attempted as was the case with the Malon).

From Voyager's perspective at this stage also the major races they had encountered in the Delta Quadrant were either primative, or wanted to steal organs. Neither making for great allies. Janeway was likely also conscious that they could stumble into borg space at any moment and so would want to conserve their munitions as much as possible.

We see a number of 'Voyager trades with people' episodes as the show goes on and the most relevant one here is the (otherwise shameful) episode Retrospect where Voyager is seen actively trading and shopping for weapons.

With this context, it's easy to see how the torpedoes ended up being replenished despite the line in episode 5. They traded for the raw materials or components and built them.

As for shuttles, they literally built the Delta Flyer - a highly experimental Tom Paris napkin scribble of a design within a week. Then blew it up and built it again with even more experimental technology.

They clearly had a lot of practice (re) building shuttles by season 5 to pull that off!
