A while ago we had a post with a comic that was a bit controversial due to it being generated by genAI, but we did not explicitly have a rule against it.

We wanted to discuss this and ask the community, but this apparently had already been a topic on feddit.uk for awhile and they have made a instance rule about it (announced in this post).

Since buyeuropean community is on feddit.uk, the feddit.uk rules apply to this community and therefore I wanted to announce this new rule so it doesn't come as a surprise.

Copy of the post body text from the announcement of this rule on feddit.uk:

So no:

  • AI generated memes of images
  • AI generated answers to questions

edit: this applies to feddit.uk communities, we won’t block AI art communities on other instances or sanction our users for posting on them.

(Reposting @buyeuropean@feddit.org's post to federate sticky post and adding a bit of new info. Here you can find the original post.

Additionally: A link to a post where the dev answers questions about buy-european.net's philosophy and reasoning around their decisions.

We worked the last months on a new completely ad-free database for European products, brands, services and companies. A few days ago we released the site. The website focuses on usability with a simple search form and a clear structure. After the technical development we are now in the process of filling the database with content. The website is currently available in English and German!

You can also submit your own suggestions for European products, Non-European products that you try to find alternatives to, and categories that may be missing.

If you have any feedback, we would appreciate it. If you like it and want to share it, we appreciate that too. :)

Thanks in advance!

https://alternativeto.net/

AlternativeTo is a large database of software and online services focused on showing popular alternatives to applications. They have a lot of filters that you can use to find the right app for you and hopefully they will soon include an EU or country of origin filter!

Btw, it's a Swedish website.

So apparently Zalando is problematic, see https://lemmy.ml/post/29285005.

I liked it because they have plenty of brands and despite they made it more difficult some years ago, it was still possible to filter somewhat by environmental and ethical gradings.

Alternatives?

I'm looking for an alternative to duolingo, the main appeal for me of duolingo is the gamification of the app as this helps me to stay consistent (so just normal flashcards would not be suitable).

Thanks in advance

My 2yo nephew and his parents are moving to Latvia from overseas. I'd like to send the kid birthday and Christmas presents each year, and usually the easiest way to do this is by ordering a gift online within his country/region (I live in Australia and international shipping is expensive).

What are some European online shops that ship to Latvia? At his current age I'm mostly interested in books and toys, but may need more variety as he gets older. Bonus if the store offers gift certificates, as that may be the best option until they get settled.

Thanks!

Is it time to start an Infomaniak community on Lemmy to post news and Q&A?

I’ve recently picked Infomaniak for my buyeuropean/degoogling process and I think it’s pretty great, but the online dicussion is really limited compared to Proton or Tuta.

Does someone have recommendations for cargo shorts? I need new ones for the upcoming summer. Everything I find are shorts without additional pockets and/or they are to short, I like mine at knee length. Thank you!

I created this page so we can have a link to point people to. What this needs:

  • A short and memorable url.
  • A better design? It's now under my project and thus in the same design, but I would prefer it to be a separate thing.
  • The url in the logo.

Help is very welcome.

if youve ever been put off by the thoughts of having to install self-hosted web apps or manage a cloud VPS or a DIY server at home, then pikapods might be worth checking out

they make it very easy to get up and running. just sign up (they give you 5 euro free credit to get started), install the apps you want, then you will be charged a certain amount depending on how many apps youre using

theres about 90 apps to choose from but some notable ones would be Immich for photos, Joplin for note-taking, Blinko for something more like Google Keep or Pinterest, FreshRSS for managing RSS feeds, Wallabag for saving articles to read later, Navidrome for running your own music server, Nextcloud as an alternative to Google Drive or OneDrive

im running wallabag and freshRSS myself and theres not much to comment on really, they were both very straight forward to set up!

This year, I gave 10 euros to Libre Office

https://www.libreoffice.org/

I gave 5 euros to VLC

https://www.videolan.org/vlc/index.html

I gave 5 euros to Qbittorent

https://www.qbittorrent.org/

I come from a low-income country. Europeans can afford to give much more.

Last year, the CEO of Adobe earned 20 million dollars. He only travels in an armored SUV with bodyguards. He has been described as completely obsessed about money and power. If he could get away with it, he would murder open source developers.

With very limited ressources, Inkscape, Krita, Gimp, Kdenlive are doing fantastic work, offering alternatives to Adobe.

Please support open source software. You don't have to spend fortunes. Just adopt one software.
