For those interested in the Vision Pro, let me know what questions you have about the device. I’ll be getting mine this afternoon and will be trying out all the features.

Well this is interesting. I plugged my phone into my computer to pull some photos off of it and I just happen to start browsing it via Windows Explorer since the device shows up there. Imagine my surprise when I saw things that were in my Hidden folder show up clear as day. It seems that lock is only at an application level and just browsing the file system it’s there to see.

Does anyone else experience something similar? Is there a note I missed that it’s still be available via other means?

Anyone know how long specific bundles are available to purchase on Apple TV? Do they change monthly or something, or would a specific bundle be perpetually available to buy?

I found my 7th gen iPod Touch running 15.8.2. This device is no longer supported by Apple so I can’t Sign in with Apple ID to do anything useful. Any ideas of how I can save this device from becoming e-waste? I was trying to add Delta emulator to use it for roms but no luck.

Any ideas/suggestions?? 🤷🏼‍♀️

Attached what I think are my relevant settings. I mainly use Safari for iCloud Private Relay.

Maybe it makes it harder for a site to track me if I’m using Private Browsing versus using the regular mode without clearing website data, eh?

Too bad Tab Groups don’t isolate cookies (and other data), seems like that would solve for some of my use cases. And too bad Private Tabs forget cookies when they’re not used for a while / you run out of RAM. That would also solve for some use cases.

I’d like to pin a dozen or so completely isolated tabs and have them always maintain my cookies. Because I can’t, I use Tab Groups for a few sites I use frequently, and launch a new Private Tab for everything else.

iCloud Private Relay keeps your internet activity private

Private Relay hides your IP address and browsing activity in Safari and protects your unencrypted internet traffic so that no one -including Apple—can see both who you are and what sites you're visiting.

Their Safari extension just stopped working. They reposted it under a new App Store entry. 🤷‍♂️🙄

I am running Linux on my macbook pro and it has a Broadcom BCM4360 wifi card. Problem is that the driver for it is proprietary (or more accurately, mostly proprietary with some of the source code available), quite outdated, and I couldn't get it to work with Linux kernel v6.9.5.

I am running Gentoo Linux on my macbook with a custom kernel. I previously had wifi working, but then I reinstalled Gentoo (because I wanted to do full disk encryption), copied over the kernel config file from my previous install (which I knew had working wifi), migrated it to a newer kernel version (plus added support for full disk encryption) and now the wifi drivers won't even compile.

So, I was thinking of replacing the current wifi card with something that has modern and open-source drivers for it. Is it possible to do that on a Macbook pro 11,2 (Retina, 15-inch, Late 2013)? If so, are there any compatible wifi cards with open source drivers for Linux?

I have set my new name everywhere I can in the AppleID settings but the old name is still showing up in this place, and maybe in other places which I haven't seen yet. But how can I get my chosen name to show up here?

(for clarity, this is the profile picture selection on iPadOS)

Solution: The solution for me was that I had to change my name in the contacts.

I use predictive text for one thing: emoji. I always, always, always want to see emoji suggested when I type any word or synonym that matches an emoji. Workarounds are not permanent, and using the emoji keyboard or Siri are not optimal. Please allow me to enable predictive emoji in all apps permanently forever. Thank you!

Also as far as my time estimate, that’s how long there’ve been complaints about the feature. I do know Text Replacements and sending yourself or using emoji repeatedly in a given app are possible workarounds.

The ChatGPT app for Mac is now available to all users, OpenAI announced today. The app first came out in mid-May, but it saw a slow rollout that was limited to ChatGPT Plus subscribers until now.

Basically the title. Maybe this is old news, but I didn't know about this trick until recently. Have fun, use responsibly :)

There were a number of exciting announcements from Apple at WWDC 2024, from macOS Sequoia to Apple Intelligence. However, a subtle addition to Xcode 16 — the development environment for Apple platforms, like iOS and macOS — is a feature called Predictive Code Completion. Unfortunately, if you bought into Apple's claim that 8GB of unified memory was enough for base-model Apple silicon Macs, you won't be able to use it. There's a memory requirement for Predictive Code Completion in Xcode 16, and it's the closest thing we'll get from Apple to an admission that 8GB of memory isn't really enough for a new Mac in 2024.

In Mark Gurman's latest report he claims Apple is "considering" making the upcoming non-Pro Vision headset "reliant on a tethered Mac or iPhone". […] But at closer inspection, there are a number of reasons this probably couldn't work, and it's simply a bad idea even if it could. […]

The real issue is that devices without a cooling fan like smartphones cannot sustain their peak performance for more than a few dozen minutes at the absolute most. […]

Even if this problem could be magically solved by some future cooling system, an iPhone's battery is three times smaller than the battery attached to Apple Vision Pro, which weighs almost twice as much as an iPhone.

With Apple Vision Pro however, temperature doesn't seem to be the only factor in fan speeds. According to Max Thomas (aka Shiny Quagsire), the main developer of the visionOS port of the SteamVR streaming tool ALVR, the headset also sets the maximum fan speed based on how loud the fans are, measured with the headset's microphone array.

The idea is presumably that in louder environments, those with more ambient noise, the fans will be harder to hear. So the overall goal of ensuring you rarely hear any fans can be maintained while maximizing performance.

This all leads to the bizarre conclusion that Apple Vision Pro should perform better in noisy environments […].

Hi,

is there a decent adblocker for Safari like uBlock Origin for Firefox? Most adblockers in the store seem a bit scummy somehow and I'm not sure if I can trust them.
