I was out running last night and I came back after the kid had fallen asleep, so I needed to wait until this morning. It only takes an hour, so I can hang the clothes to dry before going to the office.

Kizza Besigye, a longtime rival of Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni, disappeared on that Saturday while visiting the country for a book launch by Kenyan politician Martha Karua. He reappeared several days later at a military court in the Ugandan capital of Kampala, charged with various terrorism offenses including the illegal possession of firearms.

In July, 36 members of Besigye’s Forum for Democratic Change—one of Uganda’s biggest opposition parties—including one individual who held refugee status in Kenya, were deported from Kenya and charged with terrorism in Kampala.

Summary

Rudy Giuliani, facing a $150M defamation judgment for false claims against Georgia election workers Ruby Freeman and Shaye Moss, erupted in court, declaring he’s unable to pay his bills due to frozen assets.

Giuliani, 80, has turned over some assets, including a car and access to his Manhattan apartment, but disputes over ownership documents persist.

A federal judge denied Giuliani’s request for extended deadlines and refused to delay a January trial that may decide if more assets, including his Florida home, will be surrendered.

Giuliani continues to deny wrongdoing.

To clarify the question somewhat, what I mean is: does having loved ones and/or a cause you're willing to die for give you strength? Or, does it instead expose a vulnerability to be exploited?

This post was originally much longer, but I've cut it down to keep it a bit more open ended. I know that the phrasing is somewhat misleading. In a way, you never really possess someone or a community or even something to lose, they're just people or things or causes for which you care deeply, and that care opens up the possibility for emotional pain that can be exploited. At the same time having those cares can give you a reason to live, a cause to fight for, a person for whom you are there to ride or die for.

I suppose the question I ultimately want to ask is, which ends up playing out more in your life experience? Someone exploiting your love/care as a weakness? Or that love/care motivating you to defend them to the bitter end?

I know this is likely to be a "it depends" answer, but if you have some further insights, I'd be greatly appreciative. Thanks in advance.

Bernie Sanders caused a stir last week, when the independent senator from Vermont and two-time contender for the Democratic presidential nomination sent a post-election email to his progressive supporters across the country. In it, he argued that the Democrats suffered politically in 2024 at least in part because they ran a campaign that focused on “protecting the status quo and tinkering around the edges.”

In contrast, said Sanders, “Trump and the Republicans campaigned on change and on smashing the existing order.” Yes, he explained, “the ‘change’ that Republicans will bring about will make a bad situation worse, and a society of gross inequality even more unequal, more unjust and more bigoted.”

Despite that the reality of the threat they posed, Trump and the Republicans still won a narrow popular-vote victory for the presidency, along with control of the US House. That result has inspired an intense debate over the future direction not just of the Democratic Party but of the country. And the senator from Vermont is in the thick of it.

In his email, Sanders, a member of the Senate Democratic Caucus who campaigned in states across the country this fall for Vice President Kamala Harris and the Democratic ticket, asked a blunt question: “Will the Democratic leadership learn the lessons of their defeat and create a party that stands with the working class and is prepared to take on the enormously powerful special interests that dominate our economy, our media and our political life?”

His answer: “Highly unlikely. They are much too wedded to the billionaires and corporate interests that fund their campaigns.”
