On Sunday August 23rd 1851 a hard fought riot broke out in Sydney. Whilst such disturbances were common place at the time this particular riot is interesting in that it was sparked by the arrest of a sailor for wearing women's clothing, was led by military men and involved attacks on a number of police watch-houses. Despite police and newspaper reports of the incidents being confused and often contradictory the riot tells us much about attitudes of Sydney's population towards cross dressing, police and the law.

Until late last month, beekeepers who sold the rare native honey, which retails for up to $500 per kilogram, were operating in a grey area and did not have the law on their side.

On July 22, it finally gained Food Standards Australia New Zealand (FSANZ) approval.

"Originally our honey didn't meet the current standard that was written for honey bee honey. It was more watery, the pH was different," committee chair Dean Haley said.

Not that I'm inclined to defend the Coalition, but I suspected that the ratio was due to them being in opposition, and the historical record would seem to indicate that's a large factor: https://www.aph.gov.au/About_Parliament/Parliamentary_Departments/Parliamentary_Library/pubs/rp/rp1617/DisorderlyConduct#_Toc468869261

Non-government members, including crossbenchers, account for 92.8 per cent of all instances of disciplinary actions from 1901 to the end of the 44th Parliament in 2016—irrespective of whether Labor or the Coalition has been in Opposition (see Table 11).

That's great news!

  • In short: A man is in hospital after he was hit by a whale's tail while fishing near Tweed Heads.
  • Authorities located the men and brought them back to shore.
  • The man sustained superficial facial injuries and is in a stable condition.

  • In short: Musicians passed a vote of no confidence in the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra's managing director and operating officer on Friday night after the cancellation of a performance by a pianist who spoke about the conflict in Gaza.
  • The move has also prompted well-known band The Cat Empire to postpone three shows with the MSO.
  • What's next? The Melbourne Symphony Orchestra says it will conduct an independent review into its policies

'Multi-Account Containers': https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/containers

With it, you can open tabs in different 'containers', which have their own set of cookies, etc.. So, for example, you can be logged into two accounts for the same website, just in different containers, or keep all your shopping accounts in one container (and set those sites to always open in that container) to reduce tracking and targeting.

  • Tab-organisation features (e.g. stacking, trees)
  • Synchronised history - so you can find something you were looking at on your phone on your desktop or vice-versa
  • Containers (Firefox) are great
  • Full-page screenshot (Firefox) is very handy

  • In short: The Melbourne Symphony Orchestra admits it made an error when it pulled pianist Jayson Gillham from an upcoming performance over comments he made about the killing of journalists in Gaza.

  • The MSO said it made an "error" in cancelling his performance, but maintains their concert was not an appropriate place to express personal views.

  • What's next? The orchestra's August 15 concert, which was expected to go ahead without Mr Gillham, has now been cancelled due to security issues but the MSO wants to reschedule the performance.

Australia: The Lackey Country

[–] zero_gravitas@aussie.zone 3 points 4 weeks ago

Yeah, that is very silly. The usual convention when you have a tie for a ranking is to skip the appropriate number of rankings afterwards. Probably deliberate so that more countries' media picks up the story because their country has a high ranking.

Also, hats off to Henley & Partners for somehow convincing the media that a very straightforward ranking needs to be a brand-named 'index'. They don't even compile the data! They just take it from IATA.

Full rankings and more info here: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Henley_Passport_Index

Chas was still doing the Planet Extra Podcast while he was on break 😆

I highly recommend it, if too much detail is never enough: https://planetamericapodcast.libsyn.com/

🤮 What a fucking embarrassment that we still officially have a monarchy.

[–] zero_gravitas@aussie.zone 5 points 1 month ago

Yeah, fair enough. I don't have any first-hand experience, but advice I've heard is that if you can get just one other committed person on board, you're halfway there.

If you've got a local Food Not Bombs group, that's a good place to find people that are into cooperation. There's other community groups around that might have people who are interested or that are willing to provide infrastructure of some kind - men's sheds come to mind. Otherwise, it's worth a try posting on local Facebook groups.

There's probably a guide or blog written around getting something like this set up. I should have a dig around.

Without knowing about how things are set up in your local co-op, maybe you could investigate setting up a two-stream system of 'budget' and 'organic'. Or you could just set up an entirely separate co-op.
