I just looked at their pinned post and it's 100% satire and if you think otherwise you've never been on satire sub before

What's Not True

  1. Mr. Huffman has never lied or been dishonest. He has been 100% forward throughout this whole process.

  2. That apps "can't afford" to pay the reasonable fees Mr. Huffman is requesting. Many of them are embroiled in inefficiency, and even the highest cited api costs on their part have still been well within reason.

  3. Mr. Huffman's actions won't "kill" reddit. In fact, the changes he id making are necessary to ensure that reddit continues to thrive.

For all these reasons and many more, we at /r/FriendsofSpez #standwithhuffman, and you should too!

I mostly use Infinity for Reddit (where Jerboa for Lemmy clearly draws a lot of inspiration from)

Sometimes I also use reddit on my PC but the site is horrible there and the old site, while not as buggy, doesn't look great.

My guess is that they want to use the already established userbase of Mastodon as a starting point. There's going to be more content from the start and also more users. If they would make a new app with no users they would need to start from scratch which is more risky.

Instagram was the last one I expected to join the fediverse. They actually actively blocked 3rd party clients before and even shut them down.
