I was sort of under the impression that tlp was an "install it and leave it if you want" type of thing, but that you could tweak it more to your liking if needed. ๐Ÿคทโ€โ™‚๏ธ Well, in any event it didn't work for me in either case!

Thanks for the suggestions; I might give auto-cpufreq another shot first just because I've used it in the past on another machine, but if that doesn't work, I will definitely take a look at tuned. ๐Ÿ‘ Will try to remember to report back with the results, though it may take a while.

I've got "Play DRM-controlled content" active . . .

I have uBlock and Canvas Blocker off, the little shield thingy off, my VPN off, and Autoplay allowed, but still cannot play videos on bandcamp. Anyone else having this problem?

I think it's already enabled, AFAICT.

I've got a Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Carbon 10th generation, which, from the start, IIRC was criticized for not having the best battery life, I think, because of its processor (12th Gen Intel Core i7-1280P ร— 14).

I thought I had read that using a more recent kernel might help the lowish battery life problem (I'm using 6.11.0-24-generic at the moment), but it doesn't seem to help much, if at all.

I tried using tlp, which meant uninstalling power-profiles-daemon, but this just made my laptop run hot, and also screwed up my battery when I tried to set charging thresholds (had to reset it by using the emergency pin hole), so I probably won't be trying that again. Reinstalled power-profiles-daemon, and now have it on power saver; so back to normal now, not running hot, but battery life still isn't great.

Anything else I could try? There's auto-cpufreq which I used for a while on an older laptop, but that was quite a while ago . . .

Especially if I insist on watching them in high definition? Yeah, probably doesn't help!

No, nothing like that, fortunately; as long as I have power-profiles-daemon installed, it runs fine.

Not sure what the hdparm commands are supposed to do . . . ?

Yeah, my brightness level is usually set kind of low; like right now it's 20%(!), which is actually how I like it. The keyboard backlight is at 100%, and I kind of need it to be that way because of the state of my vision. The screen dims to 5% after 5 minutes. My stopwatch applet tells me now that I didn't even make it to 3 hours! ๐Ÿ™

A bad habit, but I often end up watching videos in my browser, LibreWolf, while I'm working, and I'm sure that probably adds to the power drain rather significantly.

From the Man Himself (Clem):

JL

Hello, and thank you for the new release. I have a question about the power-profiles โ€“ how and when are they applied? Here is why I ask. I have custom settings โ€“ set by tlp and by scripts โ€“ and I donโ€™t want Cinnamon to override those settings. Thanks.

Clem

Hi JL,

Theyโ€™re applied by power-profiles-daemon. Note that Cinnamon supports it as a feature but doesnโ€™t depend on it. If youโ€™re using TLP you can remove power-profiles-daemon for it not to interfere. The profiles will just then disappear in the Cinnamon Power Settings and power applet.

https://blog.linuxmint.com/?p=4785

Now my only question is, which is better, tlp or power-profiles-daemon? Guess I'll have to run some tests.

Oh yeah, and what about auto-cpufreq?

Thought I'd ask before installing it and potentially messing things up.

Ok, I think what we're supposed to do now is this: Go to the Update Manager>Edit>Software Sources>Maintenance and either "Remove foreign packages" or "downgrade foreign packages." I think this's been there for a while now, just never used it before.

Confront them? Ignore them? Move on to other things? Probably the last two.

It would be nice if Leta had tabs for images, videos, etc.

StartPage should be !sp.

This is unfortunately the same type of experience I've had with SearXNG. ๐Ÿ™

While I'm waiting for the Linux desktop client for Proton Drive . . . does anyone have any experience with Filen?

Up until recently there used to be these special batteries you could put in your fire/smoke/CO alarm that would contact you on your smartphone if the alarms went off while you were away.

They don't make them anymore, and if you want anything equivalent, it seems like you have to buy into an entire "smart home control system" or whatever they're called, and I don't need or want that.

It doesn't have to be a battery, but is there some way I can set up my alarms to contact me without surrendering all my privacy? The alarms I have now also aren't hard-wired into the house, which could present a problem, but that's why the Roost batteries were so nice!
