The disappearing Steam window might be fixable by starting steam with the -no-cef-sandbox
option. If that works, then it's due to some issue with the built-in browser.

Shared NTFS drives can have problems because Windows saves time on shutdown by just not writing them out completely.
If it's the latter, you'll probably see the NTFS drive either fail to mount at all, or log some errors. You can fix that by disabling fast startup on Windows.
