Here's a link: Invidious

I've just transferred all of my serious projects on Codeberg over to a separate organisation, and I've noticed that there are now only two mediocre repos on my main profile. Does anyone have any ideas for simple, handy things I could build to flesh it out?

I code mainly in Python, I know HTML (but not JS), I regularly use Bash and Zsh, and I am learning C++.

I've heard and read recently about a warrant that shows that the US government is monitoring push notifications on iOS and Android. This is possible because push notifications mostly work remotely, using "push notification post office" servers at Apple and Google.

I am aware that certain apps; such as Threema, Signal, Proton, Tuta, and others; use their own servers for push, but not all apps will do this. If I was to run a deGoogled Android ROM or an alternative mobile OS, how would push notifications be handled? And is there an option that doesn't involve a central server at all?

Kiwix is a pretty good tool. The only real disadvantage (as far as I know) is that edits to the pages often take a long time to come through after they're made on Wikipedia (or whichever wiki you're looking at); sometimes weeks or months.

Services I Use:

  • LibreX (search engine)
  • CloudTube (YouTube proxy)
  • PeerTube (federated YouTube alternative)
  • Tutanota (mail & calendar)
  • Organic Maps (maps app based around OpenStreetMap)
  • Cryptee (encrypted notes)
  • Matrix (chat)
  • LibreOffice + Collabora Office (office suite)
  • Kiwix (offline Wikipedia & other wikis)
  • NetNewsWire (RSS reader, for news)

Arms of the Fediverse I Use Regularly:

  • Mastodon
  • Pixelfed
  • Lemmy
  • PeerTube
  • WordPress

Dormant Arms of the Fediverse:

  • Friendica
  • Kbin
  • Funkwhale
  • WriteFreely

I have installed Linux on all four of my laptops, and I'm hoping to migrate from my iPhone to a Pixel with DivestOS as soon as I move out of my parents' house (I'm currently 17), or sooner if possible.

I have also swapped many web apps for desktop apps, and my music collection has been based around CDs and DRM-free files since it started in 2016. In addition, I still use DVDs, VHS tapes, and (to a lesser extent) good old-fashioned Torrents for my films and TV shows.

If the internet becomes altogether too bad, there's always Gemini. Making web apps is trickier, but entirely feasible.

I think there was also a federated social media site on Gemini, which could interact with Mastodon, but I can't find it.

I'm afraid a PWA might be the only way to go. uYou, Cercube, and Yattee are the only apps that aren't crammed full of ads, tracking and in-app purchases.

I have an iPhone. The storage I have is all I've got.

Now THIS is epic!

  • It's fast
  • It's FOSS
  • It's private
  • It supports accounts
  • It has an app
  • It can play YouTube Music tracks
  • The UI is pretty nice

Very well done, everyone! Please accept a star on GitHub.

I think it was this one, but I just went onto SearXNG and searched for "vaporwave wallpaper".

I'd be surprised if Google completely stamped it out. They're on Codeberg now, so that'll make takedowns trickier. It's also distributed, so taking down the Invidious websites is virtually impossible.

Also, while Google probably has pretty good lawyers, I'm not sure how well they'll stand up if they go to court.

What absolute wankers! In case anyone's adblock goes south, here are some YouTube alternatives:

For Watching YouTube

For Uploading

  • PeerTube
  • Idk, make a video blog or something.

Well fuck. What would you recommend for a mid-2010s ThinkPad, on which Firefox is slightly too heavy, which runs Arch. Bear in mind that I'd prefer to avoid Blink (despite having been using Brave).

My last experience with Win10 vs now:

(FOSS in bold)

  • Edge -> LibreWolf, ~~Brave~~
  • Windows Mail & Calendar -> Thunderbird, Tutanota
  • Windows Explorer -> Thunar, PCManFM
  • Todoist/iCal -> fruux + Thunderbird
  • NCH VideoPad -> Kdenlive
  • iTunes, Spotify -> CDs, Audacious, DeaDBeeF, Bandcamp
  • VLC -> mpv, Parole
  • OneNote -> ~~Obsidian~~ Joplin + Backblaze B2
  • Firefox Lockwise -> Bitwarden
  • WPS Office -> LibreOffice, ONLYOFFICE
  • VSCode -> Micro
  • Visual Studio -> Micro + GCC + Glade
  • Finale -> MuseScore
  • NT -> Linux (obviously)
  • Windows 10 -> Debian, Arch Linux

And now, the online services:

  • Ecosia -> LibreX
  • YouTube -> CloudTube
  • Twitter -> Mastodon
  • Reddit -> Libreddit, Lemmy
  • Dropbox, Google Drive -> MEGA, Filen, USB sticks
  • Blogger -> Neocities, Flounder (gemini protocol)

Sorry for the long post. Here are some potatoes:

I have three:

  • They don't make things like they used to
  • We don't need all these damned computers in everything
  • Modern music sounds like crap

I'm 17.

Mostly distraction. I listen to a lot of music, watch cartoons (I'd recommend The Owl House, if you haven't seen it), and (for an unknown reason) I can hyperfocus. I'm also growing Padrón chillies and chestnut mushrooms.
