You might want to connect with them on Mastodon. I found them super helpful with a couple of questions I had.

Did you go in the Omnivore plugin settings to point it to a folder? I just created a folder called “Omnivore” and it drops all into that folder.

Oh Omnivore for sure!!! It’s a reader app so you send it there. Read, highlight and it sends the highlights to Obsidian. It can also handle newsletters and RSS feeds. Did I mention it’s free?

Has anybody read it yet? I am about halfway through. And wow. I learned a ton so far.

So much fun. Such a good burn. He is truly the best entertRainer! link to workout

Fiebings Pro dye and Barge won’t be sold in Canada any longer. Law change starting 2024 banning both products in Canada because of VOCs.

Comment with your challenges!

If you like to design your own patterns check out Affinity Designer. Blows my mind!

Quick to learn how to draw patterns, easy to resize and so so much more.

Here is a great example from today: I tried to figure out how to get the length of the one side of an odd shaped part of my pattern. I know the measuring tool in Affinity but it seemed to only do straight lines, distance between objects or area.

Quick search and I learned I can break the curve points and then it shows me the length of the different sides and the area 🤯

Extremely handy especially when working with zippers in a certain size.

I also can export as svg or pdf. Print and cut your patterns (pdf) or if you have a Cricut or Silhouette (svg), cut the patterns with that! Or even the leather if not too thick.

I am considering selling some patterns in the future and I can even toss in the afdesign file for people so they can adjust what they want.

Affinity Designer btw is super affordable especially compared to Adobe Illustrator and such. If I remember correctly there is free 30 day trial.

Anybody else using Affinity Designer?

I am moderating this sub and it shows 4 comments. I only see 3?! https://lemmy.ca/post/1528939 Does anybody else see 4? I am a bit concerned if there are 4 and I can see only 3 (2 are mine). As a moderator that would be no good.

I recently watched this video by Corter and it was a bit of an aha moment.

Whether it’s repair, changing the thread colour or in my case fixing some mistakes … I love how leather products can be opened up and redone. Not everything of course but the stitch line is fairly simple to revamp, billets are quickly replaced and even edges can be re-burnished.

I love the 2nd bag that I ever made a lot but it was my second bag. I had missed a whole and one corner was therefore off, I attached the buckle upside down (it works but looks off) and a seam was opening up. Burnished edges weren’t good yet.

So I sat down today and fixed it all. It was easier than I thought and it’s a nice upgrade! I wish I had taken before and after pics.

I am still on version 1 but I want to add the iPad app. Are the files compatible or will I run into the version issue?! They have a sale on right now so I am looking at $125 (universal upgrade) vs iPad only ($18). It’s a huge difference. I don’t need the full suite of software really just the designer.

I haven’t tried Bear so I am not sure how it works or what you collect there. I am fairly new to leather crafting but I design all my stuff. I am super interested in talking about this as I have a set up but I am sure it can be improved immensely. So I hope you and others share more details as well. (Below is all Mac, iPad and iPhone apps)

Here is what I do:

Obsidian for general notes, ideas, shopping lists, bookmarks on materials and supplies that I want to try. I also use Omnivore (read it later app) for articles because I can highlight important stuff and it drops it into obsidian for me. (Btw always looking for blogs on design principles and fashion).

Drafts I just discovered this app and I am in love! I put a widget on my lockscreen for ultra quick capture of ideas. Sometimes I just have an idea even on the street walking and I can add a quick note (even using my watch!). So handy.

**Pinterest, retailer homepages, stores, tv shows etc. ** I do look everywhere at (atm) handbags. I study how they are made, proportions etc. In store is great because you can get a real feel for size and a good look at details but I want a pic as well so I often google the brand right there and save the link. Pics I often drop into iCloud files, grouped by what the part is that interests me on the pic e.g straps, bag shapes, closure etc.

Freeform for grouping pictures on a design I am working on. Maybe I saw a shape of a bag and want to make something similar. I put it into a new project there. I start adding text on possible sizing, strap length etc. Maybe I have a closure in mind already, I’ll add the pic of that etc. It grows over a few days, weeks.

Affinity designer I often draw out the pattern or parts of it here. Easy enough to work at it. And I can cut (to a certain size) a pattern with my Cricut (I don’t recommend that machine but that’s another topic). I often copy pics into affinity as well. As a visual reminder of what I am going for.

Off the computer: I have a notebook for drawings ( I am terrible at drawing!) but don’t use it a lot. I make mock up from card stock and poster board. Sometimes a smaller version. Sometimes full sized depends on what I want to figure out.
