I suppose, at this point, I want to understand whether you accidentally misinterpreted the context of the original comment (downloading .exe from TPB) or intentionally misinterpreted it for "comedic effect".

Lemmy back to making assumptions about comments. Not in the least indicated by the amount of downvotes to my original comment. Also Lemming really don't like hearing truths that don't vibe with them.

But to address your comment, I suppose you didn't say anything wrong, but it assumes that I don't know about adverse effects of corporal punishment and somehow approve of it.

I come from culture where corporal punishment is the default. 90-95% of boys (not so sure about girls, should be much less) experienced it, at least in the years of my childhood (it luckily seems to be going down, from my personal experience). But this doesn't mean that 95% of boys get beaten to pulp with a bludgeon. Most of the punishment is a slap on the back of the neck or something equivalent. Do I approve of it? No. But unlike some, I'm also willing to acknowledge that it's by far not the worst thing a parent can do, and the amount of potential trauma is likely negligible. And most children don't see these as "parents turning on them" or "life threatening experience". (Source: was a child who went to many different schools with children of various socioeconomic status)

I wasn't saying I was fortunate, I'm pretty sure I have enough traumatic experiences, including some instances that I remember to this day. And just because all of what I said above is true, you don't have to assume that my comments are an emphatic endorsement for child-beating, or beating any living creature, for that matter.

So is your point to argue semantics?

"Downloading" colloquially referes to the proces of saving some data onto persistent storage device. When you open HTML pages they are loaded directly into RAM. They might be saved to drive if they are cached. But no regular person would refer to that process as downloading. Even I, as a webdev, don't.

In that case your comment doesn't make much sense, because when people say "don't trust that torrent site" they mean the contents of the torrents hosted there. In fact, if you use magnets, you don't download anything at all from torrent sites ever.

He doesn't make new ones, does he? Last time I saw him he was only doing porn commissions.

Don't you ever pirate software?

Not all corporal punishment by parents is "beating". I was belted, but it wasn't done out of anger (maybe only sometimes). It was just a misguided method of disciplining, done "for my benefit".

They just have such ridiculously OP tech that you can solve virtually any problem with ease. For instance:

  • Beam the entire thing and then purge the rock from buffer before materialistic (they do that with guns and viruses)
  • Beam them into a holodeck and create holo-supports
  • Beam-dig? Transport chunks of rock to the side until you have enough "sensor lock".

There are no absolutes in language, there are only reasonable deductions and guidelines. If enough people say something "wrong" enough times, it becomes "right". Which is is why there's a bunch of exceptions in languages. Best we can do is stick to making speech as unambiguous and as easy to understand as possible.

It's not really a fandom thing and more of an English grammar thing.

  • "Red shirt" is a noun phrase. It means "shirt is red".
  • "Redshirt" (or red-shirt) is a compound noun. This is a new word with its own meaning, in this instance – expendable starship crew members.

It's the same difference as with:

  • Black board (a board that is "not ok") vs. blackboard (a board used for tic-tac-toe championships)
  • Hot dog (a man's best friend in need of AC) and hotdog (a phallic mystery meat consumable)

etc.
