Yeah I can't find the proper dutch word for it in my mind (and even then I would need to find a translation) but the concept of 'you can be let go/quit in the first month without any notice' seems to me to be a normal thing (which at-will fits into, but also probation periods etc), like I doubt it is a thing at higher end jobs, and it is more of a hire a McDonalds tillworker (which is not to say this is unskilled work btw, there certainly is a difference in quality of somebody doing that work for a month vs years).

So for me the only real benefit of this offer seemed to me the price. Which is just such a weird thing to compete on with tech workers. (And I would think that the businesses interested in this offer would also be of lesser quality). To me the whole action just signals 'our students are mostly of low quality, here is a sieve to filter out the good ones'. Which is why I was baffled.

Looked it up, and guess which sub he mods, could be that im thinking of a different guy who came into sneerclub to go 'we should setup some better rational arguments against the Rationalists', which is always quite the waste of time.

Edit: While looking into this, I see that TracingWood was on a podcast with Jesse Singal of all people. (Also talked about, why Keffals is bad or something (I didn't listen, and I don't know that much about what Keffals did or didnt do wrong, but eurgh at Singal talking about trans people, and wow the fans of this podcast are quite transphobic on reddit (protip, that you dislike a transperson (who might even done bad things) is no reason to mock all trans people you shits)))

Im reading the article and im baffled. In a way which comes back to your 'HOW IS THE USA A REAL PLACE' thing.

I'm at the 'try out an engineer for four weeks' part, and am I missing something? Isn't this normal with jobs? That there is a month of tryout period? Are they just bragging about it being unpaid? How is that impressive? (It isn't like it is free for the hiring company anyway even if they don't have to pay the first month, programming famously being a non-stacking process where training and managing people into a new team is quite costly, vs hiring more people to lay bricks, a process where you can just hire more people if you want it to go faster).

Congrats to 'become a programmer motherfucker' outliving (and giving better 'coding' education) than the lamba school.

And all that without series A,B, or C!

TracingWoodgrains was the person who wanted to create 'themotte' but leftwing right?

One objection is that “woke ideology hurts EA cause areas”.

There are many counters to that.

First off, are they actually “woke”? There is a ton of disagreement.

The People Who Pray At Prompts are suddenly very worried about cults.

E: haha spoke too soon

from the replies:

Do you really think "cult" is a useful category/descriptor here?

My view: things identified as "cults" have a bunch of good traits. EA should, where possible, adopt the good traits and reject the bad ones, and ignore whether they're associated with the label "cult" or not.

Wonder what went wrong there, did they just see the word EA and Cult and went 'people are calling Rationalism a cult again, time to deploy the Rationalist answer. A bot? Something else? (More edit, ah prob somethign else as this is prob a reaction to the whole line of tweets and not that specific tweet, a line of tweets which are doing the geek social fallacies there is a little bit more to being a cult than just ostracizing people)

where left-leaning views turn away some of the most awesome up-and-coming folks.

What left-leaning views? Like most of the times people are driven off by the strawmen of left-leaning views. Look at this place for example, nobody has shared guillotine building instructions for days! I half joke here, but it was quite odd how often during my /ssc period I saw people go 'the left doesn't think/talk about X, or they have not considered problem Y', while seeing leftwing politicians I knew talk about those subjects at the same time. For all the claims about the right being better at passing political turing tests, they actually failed in real time. And considering some things we read about this event the left-leaning ideas are more like 'don't act like a transphobe'.

This was absolutely 100% a joke.

But, as jokes are never just jokes (See, I learned a thing from livejournal era Scott! ;) ), it was also a sort of metacommentary on how mask on racists are only allowed, while open racists were not (no matter how racist their opinions are or are not, a mask on racist could actually be more racist than the cringlord open racist). And lastly, it was also a commentary on how cringy Moldbugs ReadyPlayerRacist writing style is. See, layers, I'm very smart.

Austin from Manifest responds that leftist views would obviously much more damaging to EA than racist ones, because reasons.

I can accept racism, but I draw the line at suggesting that self enrichment is bad.

The party featured almost every single person from the three events that fell under the category "vaguely racist" (the more cringy or overtly racist ones weren’t invited)

Only the racists who were smart enough to not say the thing out loud too loudly were invited. No digging was done on how racist they really were, nor who the univited cringy racists were (Moldbug is quite cringe so obv he wasn't invited ;) ).

"My experience at the controversial Manifest 2024, or OMG sneerclub was right!"

No shut downs of large AI training

At least the lack of Rationalist suicide bombers running at data centers and shouting 'Dust specks!' is encouraging.
