I work in a company that deals with both commercial and government (military) software. The government is becoming more and more fixated on the software supply chain, or sw dependencies so to speak.

Existing dependencies are largely getting a pass for now, but with each new one I need to give a justification for. This includes the license of that software. I can't use GPL at work.

This.

From the perspective of software preservation, we need this. Sometimes we won't have the source, and just need it to work while also getting security updates.

From the perspective of software delivery: read up on JangaFX's recent article about this topic and the problems they run into delivering software in the present

Does anybody know why ARM laptops can't provide the same device tree info as all x86 devices?

I figure that people are able to tell from context that I mean GNU/Linux

Sounds like it's possible, but maybe with a backup phone. Unfortunately I do have some apps that I need to be able to run which only support iOS and android

Has anybody attempted to daily drive linux on their smartphone? like sailfish os, postmarket, librem, etc. I've been getting more interested in them as my pixel 4a is starting to look real old

How was it it? Were you able to run banking apps? battery life? experience with using CJK keyboards?

As far as I can tell, RCS messages are not supported anywhere, in addition to NFC payments (no surprise there). 5G seems also iffy

Nextcloud seems like the first set of office tools that has a chance to actually compete with the entirety of Ms office. They still have a long ways to go, but it's a hell of a lot better than just stock libreoffice

Great. I've been using matrix just for myself, but our local dance group went to discord because FB was being such a pain to deal with

Thanks, I'll check it out

recently I've started working with an open source java gui app that uses jpackage to generate system packages for distributions.

I'm interested in creating a flatpak for this, but I'm not sure what best practices look like for this. Should I attempt to take the files that are generated by jpackage and put those into a flatpak, or should I just take the jar file alone as provide that with a dependency on a runtime that provides java?

fair warning I am a noob in regards to flatpak

The only thing holding me back from asking for an Ubuntu laptop at work is email certificates that we need to install on windows for outlook. Otherwise I'd love to be able to switch

They don't even let us install wsl2, so annoying

for an entire year's worth of development, I honestly would have expected more. Good to see that improvements are being made, but still, it's pretty small

I put in a credit card application for Bilt and they want address and id verification via fax. They really want me to send a fax apparently

Most of my documents are virtual now, and I don't have a fax machine. I see that on Google play there are a variety of apps for sending faxes. Is this a good option to go through? Or should I print stuff and find a library with a fax machine

Just recently started using thunderbird to see how it would help managing múltiple Gmail accounts. Has anybody used the app version? Is it good? Bad?

Found a new cafe today and they're using a bunch of old programming language books in their display

We've been promised modules for years now, but I haven't heard of anybody using them in a professional setting yet.

Has anybody here been using them seriously?
