All I can say is don't access fandom websites on your work phone

Use adblockers?

Wtf, the general population must be a bunch of morons

If OpenAI can get away with going through copy-righted material, then the answer to piracy is simple: round up a bunch of talented Devs from the internet who are writing and training AI models, and let's make a fantastic model trained on what the internet archive has. Tell you what, let Mistral's engineers lead that charge, and put an AGPL license on the project so that companies can't fuck us over.

I refuse to believe that nobody has thought of this yet

Not much space when you like electronics but live in a studio. I've got pots and pans, cleaning supplies, electronics and might even be able to fit in a couple of HP workstations for home servers down there. People underestimate how much space networking and compute takes haha

I think a $60 metal frame for a mattress is usually a good idea, you can store stuff underneath

Just use Librewolf + Mullvad with extensions. Problem solved

Can I roll my own with just USB and GPG?

[–] MigratingtoLemmy@lemmy.world 12 points 1 week ago

That is brilliant, I really wish they do it ASAP

Funny business, we need to get them to move to Codeberg

Before anything else, I would like to say that I admit systemd has brought great change to GNU/Linux. sysvinit wasn't the best, and custom scripts for every distro is a pain I'd rather not have.

With that said, Poettering now works for Microsoft, systemd has basically taken over all of the common/popular distributions (if this is about the argument of "systemd making it easier for developers", disclaimer: I don't know. I'm not a developer), and this has led to a rampant monopolisation of the init system.

Memes aside, this has very real consequences. If you don't want another CentOS-style "oof, sorry, off to testing" debacle happening with your init system, might want to look at the more "advanced" distributions that let you choose the init system.

I am well aware that systemd works well for the most part, and that gamers and most other people likely don't care - which is fine, at least for now. I do expect to see a massive turnover in sentiment if something ever happens to systemd (not that I'd like for that to happen, but no trusting RedHat anymore), but I suppose we'll get to it when we do.

My sentiments are well enunciated in this recent post on the Devuan forum: https://dev1galaxy.org/viewtopic.php?id=5826

Cheers!

Hi, I have been having a look at utilising RF and trying to understand how every device around me emits RF.

I recently came across RTL-SDR and HackRF, alongside software like SDR++, TempestSDR, gqrx etc. I know that I can spy on my monitor and record keyboard keys being pressed using RF, but what are some other ways I should be looking at to exploit my digital vulnerabilities, and trying to solve such problems?

Thanks!

Edit: I'm well aware that nothing I'm doing is that interesting to security agencies across the globe. With that said, I'm interested in maintaining my privacy, and this happens to be an avenue I find interesting. Any suggestions on how I can look to do so would be greatly appreciated!

Hi everyone,

Is there any way to restrict network access for a Windows VM using KVM other than a couple of applications (Windows explorer and Firefox)? ~~I don't want to get into configuring the Windows firewall and would like to do this using KVM/other linux utilities on the host machine if possible~~ As I thought, it is unlikely that I will be able to do this from the KVM side of things. Would anyone have an idea of how I could script this for subsequent Windows VMs?

Thanks!

I don't know anything about cars.

Now that we have established that cars seriously undermine our privacy (look at the flurry of posts in this community in the last few hours), what can we do about it?

From a networking POV, if you remove the ability to connect to the Internet, it doesn't matter what the car is recording as long as you can ensure there is no physical tampering. Depending on who you are, this is a good idea, and doable for the most part (very few people have the technical knowledge to pull out the right chip from a car).

So, how do we achieve this? I implore the community to invite mechanical/car engineers who can help us on this matter, and to form methods to prevent vehicles from accessing the Internet without express consent from the user.

Thanks!

Mozilla released their studies, and I'm seeing a growing number of posts on the Internet about cars and the privacy nightmare they entail. I remember how this issue wasn't talked about earlier because "just buy an older car" was still prevalent. I'm so happy that people are taking notice. Thank you to this community and Mozilla for the work they are putting in!

I have embedded a link into the title where a person is frustrated with Cloudflare.

I'm interested in knowing the extent of their telemetry and data collection. The user alleges that Cloudflare collects cookies from visitors when one visits a website using their proxy + CDN?

Just to be transparent: I'm not looking to use Cloudflare, I'm going to use my own setup with a VPS, however it is important to know about such technologies, especially since I work in IT.

If they are going to compile Coreboot for every motherboard they use, does this mean we could run Coreboot on newer hardware too? Are their efforts FOSS?

Coreboot and Libreboot efforts have all but stopped other than Google and System76 - I'm just wondering why the community doesn't seem to pick up alongside such efforts for newer motherboards.

Cheers

Or should I lose hope in humanity completely now?

Just came across a post on Reddit asking about cars, thought I'd ask here too.

The article the reddit post cited was: https://www.thankyourobot.com/2023/07/on-road-to-privacy-invasion-unmasking.html

In short, if I'm in the market to purchase a new car, which one should I go for to improve privacy? And if we assume that such a thing is not possible anymore, what can we do for our (newer) cars to be more private? I was considering things like removing the radio antenna (if I can, that depends on the model of the car).

I'm also interested in knowing just how would car companies mine information from a car if I haven't connected my mobile to it? Do cars have SIMs inside them that have free 4G/5G access and can send information that way? How would I check if my car is doing something like this?

Thanks!

My apologies for the long title.

I'm looking for something to organise the materials I collect on various topics. As mentioned, these usually include archived webpages, documents/manuals, media (pictures, videos, audio) etc.

I know I could just create a directory system for this (and will likely do so if I can't find anything like what I describe), but just wanted to ask if anything like what I want exists.

Thanks!

Pirates want to stay on Reddit? This is the last group I had expected to have such a reaction, but here we are. Yes, the mod could have worded it better, but these people actually want to stick around on Reddit.

I personally find Lemmy to be a perfectly viable alternative to Reddit for such subs. I wonder about the reasons why these people still don't want to move.
