• California had a revolt against Mexican rule in 1846 called the Bear Flag. California joined the US at the conclusion of the Mexican-American war in 1848.

• In 1877 there was the Battle of Bear Paw in Montana against some Native Americans.

• Salt Like City was founded in 1847 (though doesn't seem to have any bear associations).

To add, our two major parties tend to adopt (to varying degrees of commitment) popular movements so they're effectively already coalitions.

For example, Republicans tend to have Christian evangelicals and business interests.
