How does the old saying go?

Ah, yes: "This is funny because it is true"

I'm always amazed how this gibberish song managed to become popular outside of Italy and, aided by memes and frequent resharing, still being known today!

Question: how do you update extensions?

I'm curious because I normally just update Firefox when it notifies me and normally reboot my machine once a day and I notice I never ever have seen ads with uBlock Origin + Firefox, not even on my phone.

Doesn't uBlock Origin update automatically?

Even if they did so, isn't Firefox entirely open source? At least their work could be forked (though I agree if they don't have the resources, hardly anyone else could make it)

An old meme, with a beautiful new spin.

I'm lovin' it!

Crap, every day I see signs of how AI is polluting reality, when it could and should only be used to improve humanity.

Also, I'm starting to believe AI is effectively going to destroy or resize several jobs. For example, a friend of mine told me it asked ChatGPT to write several lines of code and it did so, maybe 85% correctly. He went through the whole code and could find mistakes and correct them. Anyhow, long story short, it would have taken his a lot of time to write them himself.

I think it's an imperfect movie with a great premise and cast. Overall, I enjoyed it a lot when it came out and I've rewatched it once, but I haven't felt it so memorable or quotable. Still, it was pleasant

Wait, if you can (or anyone else chipping in), please elaborate on something you've written.

When you say

That means they can engineer a solution to any problem that has already been solved millions of times already.

Hasn't Google already made advances through its Alpha Geometry AI?? Admittedly, that's a geometry setting which may be easier to code than other parts of Math and there isn't yet a clear indication AI will ever be able to reach a certain level of creativity that the human mind has, but at the same time it might get there by sheer volume of attempts.

Isn't this still engineering a solution? Sometimes even researchers reach new results by having a machine verify many cases (see the proof of the Four Color Theorem). It's true that in the Four Color Theorem researchers narrowed down the cases to try, but maybe a similar narrowing could be done by an AI (sooner or later)?

I don't know what I'm talking about, so I should shut up, but I'm hoping someone more knowledgeable will correct me, since I'm curious about this

I want to slightly hijack your comment to say how innovative lots of these services were when they showed up and how they all ultimately managed to become a corporate machine crapping on both customers and intermediaries.

I mean that, when they arrived, Uber, AirBnB, Glovo/Deliveroo/Just Eat/DoorDash all brought something new and potentially useful and parallel to existing structures (involving regular people on the ground which, theoretically, can make an extra buck), but then... They all went down the toilet (I suppose since they were all losing money at the beginning to establish themselves, they had to find some way to make money, but they all irreparably chose enshittifcation)

Lots of superheroes are "children of the atom" in the sense that they derive powers from some sort of radioactivity (think Spiderman or Hulk or even Daredevil) while others are just born with powers without explanation (X-Men, Thor, Superman, Aquaman, Wonder Woman).

Who is a superhero that is somehow grounded in reality, meaning that they could "potentially" make sense (either their origin story is believable, even if it has some obvious gap to make a super power happen, or their power is somehow limited or constructed in a "reasonable" way).

I guess with these restrictions, Batman would be OK since he's got no superpowers, but he's insanely rich and therefore can both train himself and have access to sophisticated gadgets, but can you think of less obvious ones (even if they're minor characters)?

Thanks for reading this!

Edit: thanks for all the answers and apologies for the slow replies. I've had a couple of complicated days. I'll now go through answering you. Several people made me realize I hadn't been precise in what I meant and helped with their answers. I was looking for superheroes or superpowers that are somehow "believable" in that they're either constructed in an unexpected way or in a way that you could almost accept as plausible

Since a few days I've not been able to see my up votes. If I go to my profile, I see the sum total of my comments and of my posts, but next to them I see two zeros.

This seemed to coincide with the Lemmy.World update.

I logged out and back in more than once, but it doesn't change this issue.

Has this happened to anyone else? If so, how did you fix it?

Thanks anyways for reading this

I unfortunately live in a very polluted area, one where air quality apps mark in red and recommend that I never get out of my lair.

When it rains enough the air quality becomes more bearable and here comes the question: where does pollution go when it rains hard? Does it get pushed to the ground and stays there? Does it get embedded in the water (so instead of breathing it, I get to drink it later in the tap water)?

I'm curious to know where it gets dispersed or stuck (to possibly avoid it)

Are any of these features already existing (and can be activated, but I didn't see how)?

(1) Making the sub-lemmy in the header have a different color so the user can visually spot the topic before reading the title

(2) Moving the header road footer, so see the topic/sub-lemmy after the title of the post

(3) removing the exclamation mark in the sub-lemmy header across the app. Since it's present in all sub-lemmy's it is a bit a nuisance

(4) change the size of the sub-lemmy names in the list of subscribed sub-lemmy's

(5) write in user's points in the about tab

(6) graying out titles of posts already read

(7) search through posts you only upvoted (but not saved). This may be a Lemmy feature request and not just Liftoff though as I've seen this lacking from all other apps I tried

Thanks for making a really awesome app!
