The RNC is challenging 3rd parties on the ballots in multiple states. They also like challenging mail-in voting. https://www.reuters.com/legal/new-yorks-top-court-upholds-mail-in-voting-all-rejecting-republican-challenge-2024-08-20/

Hell Republicans are even taking voter signed Abortion ballot measures to court to get them removed from the election. https://www.nytimes.com/2024/08/23/us/abortion-ballot-measures-have-had-success-this-year-is-their-biggest-challenge.html

The Republican party also has a history of funding the Green party intentionally to draw Democratic voters away. https://talkingpointsmemo.com/muckraker/img-src-images-santorum1-jpg-hspace-5-vspace-5-align-left-gop-donors-funded-entire-pa-green-party-drive

You're the one that needs a wakeup call if you think that the Democrats challenging RFK Jr. is unacceptable but what the Republicans are doing is fine.

They were not massive. There were some, but they were fairly small in comparison to things like Occupy Wallstreet or even George Floyd. They were tiny in comparison to the number we're seeing for Gaza (especially at universities) because by and large most people supported what happened after 9/11 because they felt like America had been attacked and even excessive retaliation was fair game.

As for the fad, these protests are not made up solely of Palestinians. Palestinians make up something like 0.05% of the US population. They're involved of course, but they do not make up more than a token amount of the protestors. Calling adoption of kids from Africa sounds dumb too, but it absolutely was a fad. Americans are quite good at following stupid fads. This is absolutely a fad issue, and it too will fade into the background noise in less than a year when something else happens to draw the attention of the populace. The US will go on sending aid, Palestinians will never get a country, and both Israel and Hamas will continue fighting and civilians will die.

You're right about one thing though, se should push the government to do more on ALL those subjects. My question is if this isn't the biggest issue, why are we pushing to get it more coverage than other issues? Why does this particular issue deserve so much attention and support compared to other issues?

It was the US doing the murdering themselves last time, and a lot more of them.

How does this situation deserve more attention than that situation?

The US is actively trading with China despite it genociding the Uighurs (proper genocide, like actually trying to wipe them from the planet by putting them in concentration camps and preventing them from having children)

The US isn't sanctioning allies for trading with Russia despite its invasion of Ukraine. cough India cough

This gaza thing is bad, but it's not even in the top 5 bad things going on right now around the world. It doesn't deserve the level of attention it's receiving in North America. It seems like it's just caught on like a fad, like adopting African orphans was for a while.

That's because people didn't give a shit about them dying then and nothing has really changed since. Most Americans still won't actually do anything to stop middle eastern people dying.

Even the current "Gaza support" from the US public is mostly just support for a theoretical ceasefire that the US government negotiates, not actually support to stop funding Israel unless they're the ones that reject the ceasefire. Given that Israel has already accepted the US backed deal, but Hamas never will, they can say they tried and keep going. The polling questions are all over the place on this topic. One of the most recent polls I saw said 41% of respondents were in support of sending US military troops to defend Israel if it gets attacked by a neighbor.

Grouping them with child predators, so they're part of the clergy now?

"I was in the US dealing with US election stuff, but for some reason it didn't entirely revolve around the situation in a single tiny foreign country."

Who do these people think they are? This is America, not gaza, not Israel, its not a neighbouring country, it's not even an ally.

When the US was killing a half million civilians in the middle east after 9/11 there wasn't this constant protest to stop it.

[–] BlameThePeacock@lemmy.ca -2 points 3 days ago

Care to go look up and tell me how Jews were treated in the region under the ottoman empire?

You seem to think that what's happening in gaza is a one sided new event but you conveniently ignore what came before.

The US killed a half million civilians in the middle east as a result of 9/11. Where's the blowback from that?

Then Oct 7th happens, and now all of a sudden everyone cares about gaza because Israel is kicking them in the teeth in retaliation.

Selective caring. Nobody gives a fuck about the rhohinga or the uyghurs, despite those situations being far worse. Where's the demands to sanction China or Chinese companies who are supporting that genocide?

Where's the support for native American groups who the US is still oppressing?

Hypocritical, all of you. I don't care about your opinions if you just pick and choose when to apply your morals to make yourself feel better. Help everyone, or stop pretending that your not doing it because it's the cool thing to support right now.

I can't, because it's not on the ballot.

Fucking Federal Liberals and BC NDP both screwed us, and there's 0 chance the Cons will do it.

To be fair, he's a TV/Movie star too.

[–] BlameThePeacock@lemmy.ca 50 points 4 days ago

Actually, that's exactly what age of consent is. The age at which you're allowed to do things with an adult of any age.

Romeo and Juliet (or close in age) exceptions are for the situation you're describing, and are usually tacked onto age of consent laws as an exception.

In Canada, there's a pair of these. At 14 and 15 it's less than 5 years older, and at 12 and 13 it's less than 2 years older.

[–] BlameThePeacock@lemmy.ca 38 points 4 days ago (2 children)

Canada only changed the age of consent from 14 to 16 last decade.

Uber's reply to the new laws.

This is the true Canada, open to all ideas. Let's keep it this way.

Personally, it seems stupid not to have a liaison in high schools. This is where teens establish "bad" patterns, and every single one they manage to save early is one less problem for decades in the future.

Intent to injure?

Based on that call, any sort of pushing or shoving should be called.

Unfortunately, it looks like he's going to elected in a couple years. I just hope people remember after a term of the Conservatives cutting important environmental policies like the carbon tax, that they will have failed to make like more affordable AND fucked up the environment more.

The conservative parties that won in the UK didn't manage to make things more affordable, the conservative party that won in Australia didn't manage it either, no party anywhere has managed it.

This crisis isn't caused by local government zoning policies, approval red tape, or anything else that the parties are talking about. It's caused by landowners (including people who own only one property) using a home as an investment.

You cannot have homes appreciate in value faster than inflation (investments) and also have affordable housing. It's impossible. That's literally just a pyramid scheme.

Until the government starts implementing policies that start reducing existing home prices, this will not be fixed. Building more units doesn't do this unless you build impossibly (literally impossible) large numbers.

So stop voting with your emotions and vote with your brain.

In case anyone was wondering what happened at the grocery stores over the last couple days.

Because reasons?
