I really wish there was a mainstream social media site Americans were forbidden from using, or at least a way to automatically block/hide them, and their petty little political turf wars from my feed, no matter how I sort.

I take it this is a reference to... Something, but I can't figure it out. What?

[–] Baku@aussie.zone 2 points 5 days ago (2 children)

I don't know if they meet your criteria for a franchise, but any forum based website (including Reddit, Lemmy, etc) always ends up with at least 1 office, friends, or IT crowd reference somewhere in the thread. They're definitely essential pop culture pillars, even if they don't qualify as franchises

I've still never seen any of them though

I'm 17, and either dislike or don't know most of them. Here's my thoughts on most of them, if anybody's curious:

Star wars - don't like it

James Bond - never seen it

Lord of the rings - never seen ir

Sherlock Holmes - don't like it

Batman - hate it

Superman - never seen it

Spiderman - don't like it

Mission Impossible -never seen of it

Mario - played and enjoyed Mario kart, that's about it

Zelda - never seen it

Pokemon - never seen it

Indiana Jones - don't like it

Back to the Future - I saw it but don't really remember anything from it, mostly forgettable

The Karate Kid - I watched it when I was too young to care, but I think I'd like it if I watched it now

A Nightmare on Elm Street - liked it

Friday the 13th - I know it, but can't remember if I've seen it

Child's Play - watched one of them, got bored halfway through

It - liked it

Rambo - liked it

Rocky - never seen it

Jurassic Park - seen it, no strong feelings

The Matrix - got bored by the 30 minute mark and turned it off

The Terminator - never seen it

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles - don't like it

Transformers - never seen (or played?) it

The Simpsons - seen most of it, love some of it

Barbie - heard the song, nothing more

GI Joe - not a clue who/what that is

He-Man/Masters of the universe - as above

Mickey Mouse - I sometimes watched Mickey mouse club house before school, but wasn't a huge fan

Toy Story - I watched (and liked) the first two

Looney Tunes - liked it

King Kong - I've heard of it but don't know if it's a toy or a tv show or what

Godzilla - I saw one of the sequels and enjoyed it

Planet of the Apes - never seen it

Mad Max - never seen it, but I live in Australia and like the outback, so this gets quoted at me at least monthly

The Muppets - I think the Muppets had a cameo in toy story or something, but I don't really know much about it

The Godfather - I really really tried to watch and enjoy this earlier this year. I turned my phone off so I wouldn't get distracted, I sat down, I ordered a pizza, I did my very best to watch and enjoy it, but I was so mind numbingly bored by the hour and a half mark that I gave up

Ghostbusters - I think I've seen bits and pieces

Alien - no, but I have seen ET

Star Trek - I don't know or care what the difference is between this and star war

Robocop - I watched one of them on late night tv a few years ago, when I was around half the age it was classified for. Barely remember it

Frankenstein - never seen (or read?) it

Dracula - never seen

Tarzan - never seen

Conan the Barbarian - never even heard of it

Jaws - I saw one

Harry Potter - hate it

The Incredible Hulk - hate ir

The Dollars Trilogy - not a clue who or what this is

Sesame Street - don't like it

The Hannibal Lecter series - don't know who or what this is

MASH - I'm pretty sure this was always on after the Simpsons finished at 7, and everybody loves Raymond was on before. I didn't like either of them. But then again, I was 5 or 6 and only interested in the Simpsons and nothing else, so I probably wasn't the target audience

I pretty much only browse Lemmy on either /local new/top day, or /all new. But to be fair, I mainly only care about local communities (and I'm on a local instance), and memes. I think if I used a general purpose instance, particularly one without its own communities, I would probably used subscribed mostly

[–] Baku@aussie.zone 1 points 1 week ago

I block about 20 or so communities. A few are ideological ones that although I don't dislike/disagree with, I just don't want to hear about, a couple of the star trek ones, pretty much anything with "news" or "politics" in the name, since that tends to be very American centric, or in the case of world news, mostly things only Americans would care about, and I also blocked the Baldur's gate and helldivers communities because they were constantly in my /all feed a while ago. I also block lemmit.online or whatever it is (an entire instance), because it was just reposts of Reddit posts made by a bot which annoyed me when I wanted to search for things

My instance federates with Lemmy World, but because of some technical issue with server lag, we don't see posts from lemmy.world for about a week (posts in LW communities from non LW users do pop up, but upvotes and sometimes comments don't federate, so they won't appear in all unless I scroll really deep). That has the effect of essentially meaning I don't see any posts in LW communities in /all unless I sort by top month or new

The issue is two fold. The first devices which don't support 4g, and the second is the loss of coverage with the decommissioning of 3G. That's what my last comment focussed on.

[–] Baku@aussie.zone 6 points 1 week ago (19 children)

I don't think anyone's really suggesting we keep 3g in the metro areas. Almost the entirety of the greater Melbourne area has 4g, with a fair chunk having 5g, and I think most major cities in the country have almost complete 4g coverage.

But in the country, there's so many places I've been through, even in the last few months, where I've only had 3g/H+, that I also don't foresee them rolling out 4g to any time soon, let alone the any time this decade. 3g can travel further than 4g, and a lot further than 5g, which means it's all well and good that they've converted all of their 3g towers to also have 4g dishes, but unless they actually build new 4g towers, it's still a net downgrade.

I'm a little late, but I was just realising I hadn't heard from the bot and was wondering what happened to it. I'm sad to see it go, although I do understand why.

If you decide to bring it back, perhaps a system where it deletes its comment once downvoted below -1. I think the Reddit bot did that. That way there's a mechanism to remove inaccurate comments. I can't remember if the bot already had something like this, but if it didn't, perhaps a user, community, and instance opt out system could be implemented. I think if iirc, the previous system was basically "if you don't like it, just ban the bot" (although I may be getting mixed up with other bots. That sort of approach often makes some people upset as they may see it as unsolicited spam with no proper opt out system.

In any case, I don't think this will be the end for AutoTLDR (or a derivative), and I'm keen to see what other projects you come out with!

Thanks for running the bot for so long, most of us appreciate it♥️

I thought they would've already done that

[–] Baku@aussie.zone 16 points 1 week ago (1 children)

I had to make a police report yesterday, and they wanted me to upload evidence. The (text) message they sent was along the lines of: "A. Last name requests evidence from you. Click here to submit evidence. vp.au/evidence"

This is a follow up to that time that they baited him into self-incrimination and fed into/encouraged his fixation back in 2021

So I ordered a GPU from MWave and they sent me a $100 naked wines voucher discount thing. But, being grog, it's 18+. And guess who's not 18+? Me. And it has a 30 day activation time frame, so won't be particularly helpful for when I do turn 18. Nobody I know drinks wine, or wants it, so free to a good home.

Voucher would have about 20 days left on it, assuming they printed it the same day they posted my GPU

Full T's and C's:

"To use this voucher, you must be 18 years or older. This voucher entitles first time Naked wines customers to $100 off their first order of 12 bottles. All codes are a minimum of 12 bottles, and a minimum spend of $155.58. not to be used in conjunction with any other offer or promotion. Next day delivery is available to Sydney, Melbourne and Perth Metro areas for orders placed before 3pm. We don't ship to the northern territory. Delivery not included. Offer is subject to change. See website for full terms and conditions"

Free to a good mouth, if anybody wants it, just comment and I'll DM you with the code and pin.

LPT: if anybody needs to but can't get through to Centrelink, go into one of the services Australia branch. If they can't fix your problem, they'll connect you to an internal number which doesn't just hang up on you.

It's fucking disgraceful that they don't even answer the phone anymore. Seriously one of the stupidest things they've rolled out. There's no ifs or buts about it, it's disgusting and needs to stop.

You can also try calling the complaints number and they can do the same thing as the branch people, but I've heard conflicting reports about this. It used to be how you had to get through, but I've heard recently that sometimes that number just hangs up on you too. But if they do answer, they'll will usually just put you through to a non hanging up number, at least if it means you won't make them do the paperwork to lodge a complaint.

Also, when you do get through, please try to remember that they're just minimum wage people doing a shitty job. They don't make the phones hang up on you, and they aren't the reason your claims take months to process, or you were underpaid, or whatever's gone wrong. You catch more flies with honey than with vinegar. You can express your annoyance to them, but abusing or yelling at them doesn't fix the problem, and won't make them answer quicker.

If you really want somebody to yell at, write a letter or email to your local MP. Or the minister for social services. Or anyone else who's penny pinching tactics caused this whole mess

Also remember you'll get through this soon, even though it doesn't feel like it in the moment

Country's fucked again!
