It still works using just a web browser. Some might just prefer a native app, which Google is currently rolling out.

Microsoft really wants someone to remind it of these days:

tl;dr from the article:

  • Auracast is a feature of the Bluetooth LE Audio standard that enables broadcasting audio to nearby devices.
  • Android added basic support for Bluetooth LE Audio in Android 13, including support for starting and connecting to audio streams.
  • Android 15 could get a dedicated page for audio sharing, signaling that Auracast could be a key feature of the new OS.

Screenshots from the article of how the feature would look like:

Lemmy seems like a nice person, even helping with bootloader unlocking and stuff

The guidelines for freezer storage are for quality only—frozen foods stored continuously at 0°F (-18°C) or below can be kept indefinitely.

Anything in particular that works better with CalyxOS + microG than with GrapheneOS + sandboxed Play Services?

Physical changes are also welcome, so things like skins, cases, screen protections etc... are fine to discuss.

For me, in this order:

  • Wi-Fi calling: it was very surprising that this was not on by default, and enabling it helped a bit with the battery life on my Pixel 7a;
  • Try custom launchers: I was happy with the phone but the very first annoying thing is the damn Google search bar and how there was no way to just hide it like any other widget. So I ended up installing KISS Launcher (it's FOSS and still maintained);
  • Bite the bullet and install GrapheneOS: you get more security, sandboxed Play Services, a more fine-grained permissions system and you can still install the default Pixel apps from the Play Store while cutting off their internet access, and most importantly you get rid of the Google bar (also enabled Wi-Fi calling as previously done).

I was looking at my books and thought it might be a good idea to hear what programming books you're reading and which ones you would be recommending and hopefully we could build a nice reading list.

I'll start with these two:

  • C++ Software Design by Klaus Iglberger: the author is a stellar presenter at conferences like CppCon (you get the contents of his book essentially for free in his talks which are on YouTube, just Google "Breaking dependencies by Klaus Iglberger"). This book is a must-have if your issue is not programming skill itself but more design-related instead and you want to learn how to write high-quality professional software with maintainability in mind. This easily replaces the classic Design Patterns: Elements of Reusable Object-Oriented Software as Klaus' book is more modern and embraces at least C++17 with e.g. variants;
  • Game Programming Patterns by Robert Nystrom: this is not about game design! This is about classic C++ patterns (implementable in other languages as well though) that you'll need if you're about to write a game, and I think one can easily see that the patterns and techniques are transposable to other domains like web browser development or even automatic differentiation.

Quoting the tl;dr in the linked article:

  • Samsung could be stepping up its game by offering seven years of major Android updates for the Galaxy S24 series, and the generous update policy might extend to other Galaxy flagships.

  • The Galaxy S24 series might also introduce charges for AI features like Live Translate and Pixel-like photo editing tools after 2025.

  • There's speculation that users may need to sign in to their Samsung accounts for certain AI functionalities.

You're maybe referring to this app: https://apt.izzysoft.de/fdroid/index/apk/com.akylas.documentscanner

It's not on the main F-Droid repo (hence the 404), but it's on the IzzyOnDroid repo.

Their UX is also incredibly deceptive. I've personally seen old folks trying to book on low-cost airline websites and they often believe they have to pay extra to get a seat.

I think the problem is the conflicting goals that Google has with that chip. They want the chip to be able to run AI stuff locally with the Edge TPU ASIC that it includes, but at the same time Google also wants to make money by having Pixel devices offload AI tasks to the cloud. Google can't reconcile these two goals.
