until after the election

Says it all, really.

[–] pleasegoaway@lemm.ee 9 points 1 month ago

She basically says: Can you put a pause on hurting everyone until AFTER I’m elected?

[–] frickineh@lemmy.world 91 points 1 month ago (5 children)

I'm not Canadian, but everything I've seen about this woman makes me think she's a stupid, hateful bitch. It seems like her bs, and PP's, is backfiring in light of how horrifyingly dumb and awful the Trump administration is, so I'll keep crossing my fingers that the election goes well.

[–] Godort@lemm.ee 51 points 1 month ago (4 children)

Dont underestimate how dumb Alberta can be. Culturally, we're very much like Texas

Then push hard on her being a woman lording her power over more deserving men. Texas doesn't like women getting all uppity like that.

[–] frickineh@lemmy.world 17 points 1 month ago

My friend just moved back to the US after living in Red Deer for several years. I've heard all about it. I thought she was crazy to give up permanent residency, but if that was her whole experience with Canada (plus her cheating scumbag ex husband), I kind of get it.

But, much like Texas, there are also a lot of decent people in Alberta who deserve better, so hopefully things work out alright.

[–] CanadaPlus@lemmy.sdf.org 9 points 1 month ago* (last edited 1 month ago)

She still barely won though.

Whoa hold up. You know the rural vote is worth more than the city vote right? The cities are basically orange, but it doesn't matter that we have the largest populations. Every rural vote is worth 3 city votes.

[–] ragepaw@lemmy.ca 36 points 1 month ago (1 children)

I am Canadian and I think she's a stupid, hateful bitch. She's an epic Karen, and why Alberta put her in charge is beyond comprehension.

[–] DerisionConsulting@lemmy.ca 24 points 1 month ago (1 children)

She's pro oil and gas, and hates trans people.

That's how.

[–] ragepaw@lemmy.ca 6 points 1 month ago (1 children)

Maybe I'm wrong, but I think it's a REALLY vocal minority that actually hates trans people. I think the vast majority just doesn't care.

[–] lobut@lemmy.ca 5 points 1 month ago

I genuinely hope that that's true. The thing is that I still know people that hate gays and just aren't vocal about it.

[–] Jhex@lemmy.world 18 points 1 month ago (1 children)

I’m not Canadian, but everything I’ve seen about this woman makes me think she’s a stupid, hateful bitch

She is MTG of the North... hateful, ignorant, vile

[–] psmgx@lemmy.world 1 points 1 month ago

Nah she's the Alex Jones of the north and ran a talk radio show. She's a propagandist, and was willing to break the PCs grasp on the province using the Wild Rose party -- and in doing so got an NDP candidate elected.

In US terms it's like if Alex Jones created his own ultra Republican party that broke the GOPs base so badly that Bernie Sanders got elected in the chaos.

[–] IslandLife@lemmy.ca 6 points 1 month ago

Maybe they should hold some sort of MMA event with her and Marjorie Taylor Greene while she's in the US? I'd watch that.

Calgary needs to step it up next election to oust her. They’re the reason shes in power.

[–] Phil_in_here@lemmy.ca 11 points 1 month ago

The Conservatives need to step up and oust her yesterday.

Seriously, they want to win so hard they're willing to sell our country out, but they refuse to acknowledge that denouncing this would show actual leadership and win back a bunch of the shift toward the Liberals.

I mean, in the grand scheme it's better for Canada for the Conservatives to fuck up and lose, but it's still not clear enough that will happen. Somehow, there's still enough Canadians who support these fuckups.

[–] CanadaPlus@lemmy.sdf.org 9 points 1 month ago (1 children)

Nenshi is going to eat her breakfast.

[–] TwinTitans@lemmy.world 5 points 1 month ago (2 children)

I mean, we’ll see. I don’t have a lot of hope.

[–] Grabthar@lemmy.world 11 points 1 month ago (1 children)

He was popular enough to be their mayor until he decided not to run for a fourth term, and Calgary has generally not been adverse to voting NDP before, so I'd say its Nenshi's race to lose.

[–] CanadaPlus@lemmy.sdf.org 3 points 1 month ago* (last edited 1 month ago)

And for reference, It's basically a 3-part game in Alberta, with each area getting an equal share of the seats. Edmonton, which always will vote NDP, Calgary, and everything else which will mostly go UCP but can see an actual competition in places like Red Deer and Lethbridge.

[–] CanadaPlus@lemmy.sdf.org 3 points 1 month ago* (last edited 1 month ago)

I mean, she was very close (1300 votes) to losing the last election against not-Nenshi, and without any scandals. It's far from a longshot.

[–] psmgx@lemmy.world 1 points 1 month ago* (last edited 1 month ago)

Calgary is owned by oil and gas. Until those stop being a thing it ain't gonna happen.

[–] CanadaPlus@lemmy.sdf.org 23 points 1 month ago* (last edited 1 month ago)

You're not a martyr because people are being mean about your barely-contained interest in collaborating, you fascist oil-lobbyist piece of shit.

It was a whole speech and everything.

[–] Punchshark@lemmy.ca 21 points 1 month ago

dani smith is a traitorous cunt!

[–] IslandLife@lemmy.ca 20 points 1 month ago (2 children)

I just read an article on reddit that said she's taking a group down to the US with her with the goal of separating from Canada/joining the US. I have genuine concerns for our country.

[–] driving_crooner@lemmy.eco.br 23 points 1 month ago (1 children)

Kinda sounds like treason, but I don't know anything about Canadian law.

[–] IslandLife@lemmy.ca 11 points 1 month ago

There was just an outcry for her inviting election interference from the US. Officials did not agree, very frustrating.

[–] Alloi@lemmy.world 11 points 1 month ago (3 children)

i hope this very small group tries. the vast majority of albertans wouldnt stand for it. it may be what leads to her getting removed and potentially charged for treason, depending on what she does by the end.

[–] IslandLife@lemmy.ca 17 points 1 month ago (1 children)

I sincerely hope you are right. I always have to remind myself reddit/Lemmy are the 'Left'. I thought there was a chance Doug Ford was going to get voted out from reading reddit last month. Instead, landslide victory with dismal voter turn out.

[–] FireRetardant@lemmy.world 5 points 1 month ago

Near record low voter turn out which is proof we really did need an emergency election. It defintely wasn't a propaganda fueled power grab with a little bribe tossed in. What the fuck happened to our country.

[–] Thepotholeman@lemmy.ca 5 points 1 month ago (1 children)

I want her tried for fucking treason. Oil and Gas WAS cool. Now we seriously need to push for hydrogen and renewable energy for independence and competitiveness. Look at China and that's all you need to see

[–] SaturdayMorning@lemmy.ca 5 points 1 month ago (1 children)

Alberta and Saskatchewan are the sunniest provinces in Canada. If they embrace solar energy, they could be the Solar Capital of Canada.

But, think of those poor, poor big oil CEOs! /s

[–] Thepotholeman@lemmy.ca 4 points 1 month ago

Honestly just as it was in the 70s, America's oil interests are impacting our country moving forward. Imagine if we had just nationalized itπŸ˜”

[–] sndmn@lemmy.ca 18 points 1 month ago

Diplomatic efforts is an interesting way to describe asking Nazis to interfere in our elections.

[–] shittydwarf@lemmy.dbzer0.com 13 points 1 month ago* (last edited 1 month ago)

She should be impeached, alternatively, the lieutenant governor of Alberta can remove her

[–] SplashJackson@lemmy.ca 9 points 1 month ago

What a fartknocker!

[–] skozzii@lemmy.ca 9 points 1 month ago (2 children)

I have no idea what Albertans see in her. Canadians seem to be so blinded by hate that they vote in the worst people.

[–] Thepotholeman@lemmy.ca 7 points 1 month ago

All they see is blue, and honestly their lack of reading comprehension and oversaturation of American news is to blame

[–] psmgx@lemmy.world 6 points 1 month ago

Oil companies run the country, along with a couple other big players like the guy who owns Loblaws. They say jump and Alberta plays along. Danielle Smith is just the latest in their long running series of mouthpieces

[–] Thepotholeman@lemmy.ca 9 points 1 month ago (1 children)

"During Wednesday's afternoon session in the Alberta Legislature, Smith said she's been unjustly criticized for her attempts to persuade officials that a trade war between the U.S. and Canada would be a bad idea. She defended her strategy, characterizing her actions as entering the "lion's den" to change the hearts and minds of Americans that Canada needs on its side.

"I will not be silent. Alberta will not be silent. We will not be pushed around and called traitors for merely having the courage to actually do something about our nation's and province's predicament, other than merely indulging in self-righteous tantrums," Smith said.

She should gtfo of Canada and stay out. How she ever got elected is such a stain on Alberta.

[–] rbos@lemmy.ca 10 points 1 month ago

Entering the lion's den to offer the lion a handjob and offer Alberta as tribute, more like.

[–] thatsmysandwich@lemmy.ca 9 points 1 month ago

no no.. let her yelp... i honestly think this is helping... the more she yelp, the more people switch over or make sure PP won't win

[–] CircaV@lemmy.ca 7 points 1 month ago

AB it’s high time to get rid of this corrupt traitor. I’ll have no respect for AB until Nenshi is Premier.

[–] Nemean_lion@lemmy.ca 7 points 1 month ago

I hope she dies a horrible death. Like at least 5 minutes of burning.

[–] psmgx@lemmy.world 6 points 1 month ago
[–] Ceedoestrees@lemmy.world 6 points 1 month ago

Wants to break any agreements that impact the oil industry, complains about the forest fires.

I have a hard time reading about these people because I always have to wonder if they know what they're doing and don't care, or if they believe what they say.

Some people have seen Trump elevate his cronies in a way that looks like an easy ride to the top if you don't have a conscience. It seems like she wants in on that circle.

[–] Banana@sh.itjust.works 6 points 1 month ago

Smelling farts doesn't count as diplomacy

[–] aSadBowlofSoup@lemm.ee 2 points 1 month ago* (last edited 1 month ago)

Is there no law or anything at all to get her to step down? With what comes out of her mouth, she must’ve broke some rule. I thought our elected officials work for us and echo our current sentiments? She’s not doing her job
