While we will try our best, lemmy.ml/c/transgender is far more open to the fediverse, and also to trolls. One of the site admins of lemmy.ml, nutomic, is also a transphobe, while hexbear is ran mostly by trans people and has a very active trans community.
Transfemicide sounds like only murders of trans women get these high prison sentences but the article makes no mention of that. Does that mean it is for murder of any transperson (trans men and women)? The naming is confusing.

That said, if I had to guess I would assume trans men aren't murdered at nearly the same rate as trans women

Afaik life can mean different things in different jurisdictions. I can mean the rest of someone's life but it can also be set to a specific number of years, e.g. 30 years.
Life can also be indeterminate, and based on future assessments.
And 1st degree murder doesn't necessarily give you life, the punishment and interpretation can be quite flexible, but a minimum might be set such as 25 years.
