This may be cool and all, but the result is definitely not pixel art. There is so much more to pixel art than a drastically reduced resolution.

Big woop, my 2002 digital camera did the same thing
I bought one of these made out of plastic from Aliexpress and it doesn't work too great. Maybe the glass one is more accurate? Like it kind of makes everything look pixelated, but it also just makes it look a bit blurry. The pixels also aren't perfect, but have soft edges. Still though it was okay for about 3 dollars.
The webpage says it's made of acrylic resins.
I wonder if it's the exact same thing but being sold for 30x more?
It doesnt look that good in the pictures, and id say 18x18 pixels is not enough for the field of view it covers. Maybe double that and youd still have a pixelated image, but actually be able to make out more than just fuzzy blocks of color.
That's cool but not 91 dollars cool.
The resulting “pixels” are not a single color, so are not really pixels as we would understand them. It just makes things look blocky.
I enjoy doing cross-stitch, and often do 8 bit and 16 bit characters. This would be very cool for taking pictures of things I like and using them to base my own own cross-stitch patterns on.
Couldn’t you just use something like Gimp to pixelate the image?
yup, that would also give you control over pixel size and probably even dimension (maybe you want skinny pixels because that's easier)
I'm sure I could... I've just never used anything like that to do anything like it.t that's a really good idea, and probably what I'll do now you've mentioned it. It didn't occur to me. I'm sort of tech illiterate, tbh. I try to know enough to stay safe online, but honestly, mostly I only use the computer for school, Lemmy, research for hobbies or interests. I use the steam deck for games, when I get a chance. Apart from that, I'm mostly offline/not on the computer. It's not, like, a conscious decision, I just never seem to be able to find the time to learn the things I should have learned years ago, and it sometimes feels like I missed my chance to be the person who gets it. Lol
