Hello new Lemmy friends!

Word on the street tells us our community is regularly making it the all page. While this is very cool news to hear, we can see how the sudden emergence of our posts in your feed might feel jarring and probably raises some questions. And also how, without knowing the backstory, our community might appear less than virtuous, so here’s a very brief introduction which hopefully will clear a few things up.

The woman we’re discussing is a body positive influencer and media personality who has gained fame and wealth by lying, manipulating, exploiting her children for content, plagiarizing BIPOC creators and blaming her BIPOC content editor for it (thereby ruining her career), among other things. Her fraudulent behavior is no different (I’d argue worse) from the likes of Jay Shetty (google him if you don’t know who he is or what he did). She’s the latest in a long line of grifting influencers who are abusing their power, taking advantage of their position and exploiting their followers. The difference is that she’s Canadian. Our laws around social media and advertising aren’t as clear (and where they are she’s disobeyed them), add to that, our mainstream media has protected her from those who’ve tried to expose her grift and silenced/intimidated anyone who’s tried to speak out.

Our Reddit sub was taken down due to reports of copyright infringement, which is unfounded and categorically untrue as no one ever tried to steal her work and pass it off as their own. The mods have made an appeal. While at first glance it may seem like we’re just “shitting on her” the sub has been more devoted to investigation and posting proof of her lies than just bitching for the sake of bitching. The reality is that she’s hurt, manipulated and let down a lot of people. She stole intellectual property and employment, caused mental distress and has repeatedly told lies to boost engagement and profit off her audience, so people are understandably upset that their voices are being silenced.

We’re grateful to have been welcomed so kindly by so many of you, and to those sticking around to watch the drama unfold, we’re glad to have you!

I don't know this person but I don't understand the hate here. If you have something painful in your mouth, then obviously that lowers the joy of eating. Depending on the intensity, every bite hurts. Still, if you're having this condition for several days, weeks or even months, you can't just stop eating during that entire period. And you can still distinguish between nice food and crappy junk. Although everything hurts to eat, dinner at a fancy restaurant may still taste better and may provide a more spectacular experience than your regular everyday food at home.

It's highly unlikely that TBP or her family are paying for their Disney vacation. Flights probably. Park stuff, food I doubt it. As a features editor at House and Home magazine I was sent to Disney to cover the Epcot Flower and Garden show. H&H paid my flights and I was given and editorial pass to the show. Disney also covered the hotel, food and dining. Back then I had a million articles on the go so didn't explore the park other than the garden festival and a parade. The trip was work. And not influencer style work. I was interviewing garden experts, managing photo shoots and etc. I worked with Disney again from 2012 to 2015 with Pandora Jewelry. Disney and Pandora are partners. I was sent to Disney World to style Pandora bracelets at the Pandora Disney World store. I was always given a very nice hotel room and a Disney bracelet thing. I could have (but didn't) charged souvineers and shopping to the bracelet. I charged food to it. I never saw a bill. I was offered a golf cart to travel the park and had access to rides, no line. In 2018 I went to DW with an ex. He was an actor-- OMG they kissed his 🍑we didn't pay for anything-- I hated it because it wasn't work related. We ate at Club 33, had a golf cart, skipped lines, our hotel room was always getting gifts sent over. I hated this experience. We both could afford to pay for Disney. The ex set all this up. It felt gross and tacky. I'd see families sweltering with little ones waiting in line for rides. Meanwhile a 60 year old toddler born with a silver spoon was complaining when service wasn't fast enough. I would see the prices of things and gag. When I was a kid Disney was way more accessible. Families could drive down camp affordably and go to the park. (I ended the relationship soon after or trip to Disney. He was mad as I refused to post about Disney). I chuckled the ex's new partner (who seems genuinely lovely but new to this freebee world) go to Disney all the time, take Disney cruises. 🤔This is the thing-- there will always be people who take take take. And now anyone can flash their bits, buy-followers, cause a stir- go viral and go to Disney for free. 😵‍💫 For me the frequency of these influencers trips is alarming, the greed!! And they don't disclose. I noticed a Canadian TV show host do this with Sunwing Vacations. She takes her family on a couple trips a year. To me they all end up losing. Some of my best adventures have been on a dime and spontaneous-- "free or gifted" takes that joy away. 🌸One fun Disney story- when I worked with Pandora I attended Disney employee training. Did you know only Minnie is allowed to wear black tights? And I had to learn the princesses so I could greet little ones with hello princess or hello queen Elsa. The BTS stuff was pretty neat. I also spent an afternoon stocking shelves at the Pandora store before I told them I was their special guest. 😄. If you ever want an authentic Walt Disney experience visit his haunts in East Los Angeles and DTLA-https://www.discoverlosangeles.com/visit/walt-disneys-los-angeles

She definitely is allowing people to believe she’s paying for this trip. She also alludes to the fact she’s paying for her parents to be there.

Did you notice the bulk of her Disney content is about the food options available at Walt Disney World? She's highlighted restaurant experiences, delivery options, reservation apps etc. I bet that's her marketing obligation.

🥰Anytime. Influencers who accept a ton of stuff might be in for a surprise with the CRA. The CRA is shifting its focus to social media. I was audited for broadcast expenses and event styling expenses a while back. It was a nightmare. Once you are in the media, the CRA will look closely at your business. I return stuff I shows on TV, unless I pay for it. It's not worth the tax bill. It pisses me off that some influencers go on TV shows and brag about what they make. Many content creators and editorial people don't make the kind of money influencers brag about. The CRA is going to think those who don't make big money are lying. 😖

Clifton's Downtown LA was also a massive influnce for Disney Land https://theneverlands.com/cliftons-republic/ and may say that Crossroads in Hollywood (built in 1936) inspired Walt's vision of Epcot.
