/c/TenFoward: Your home-away-from-home for all things Star Trek!

Re-route power to the shields, emit a tachyon pulse through the deflector, and post all the nonsense you want. Within reason of course.

~ 1. No bigotry. This is a Star Trek community. Hating someone off of their race, culture, creed, sexuality, or identity is not remotely acceptable. Mistakes can happen but do your best to respect others.

~ 2. Keep it civil. Disagreements will happen both on lore and preferences. That's okay! Just don't let it make you forget that the person you are talking to is also a person.

~ 3. Use spoiler tags. This applies to any episodes that have dropped within 3 months prior of your posting. After that it's free game.

~ 4. Keep it Trek related. This one is kind of a gimme but keep as on topic as possible.

~ 5. Keep posts to a limit. We all love Star Trek stuff but 3-4 posts in an hour is plenty enough.

~ 6. Try to not repost. Mistakes happen, we get it! But try to not repost anything from within the past 1-2 months.

~ 7. No General AI Art. Posts of simple AI art do not 'inspire jamaharon' and fuck over our artist friends.

Fun will now commence.

Am I the only person who doesn't really like Zoe Saldana all that much? I mean she's okay. She plays her roles fine. But she's nothing special in terms of acting. She never really stands out to me.

She can literally play any color.

Also, she’s a real life Trekkie and that’s how she became Uhura. Go watch the Tom Hanks movie Terminal where she basically plays herself.

She can literally play any color.

I mean, that's true with any actor now...

I dunno, I think certain people would get a bit of kickback for trying to play a black person.

[–] FlyingSquid@lemmy.world 1 points 13 hours ago

Fair, but they showed a blue person and a green person as examples. Along with just what she normally looks like.

She's pretty, is obviously game for genre work including mo-cap and and/or makeup, and pulls off vaguely haughty hyper-competence rather well, so the internet is gonna internet.

Generally speaking I don't disagree. She's fine but a bit wooden and hasn't been afforded the opportunity to show a lot of range, for whatever reason.

But even in terms of beauty- maybe, again, it's just me, but I would not put her on the level of the most beautiful people in Hollywood.

I mean she's far more beautiful than anyone who would ever sleep with me, but she's also not on the level of Margot Robbie (or if you want to stick with black women around her age, Kerry Washington) to me either.

She just comes off to me as a mid-level actor who got very lucky.

That's definitely a you thing, tastes differ. I would never put Margot Robbie above her when it comes to beauty, even though I can see Margot is the perfect white chick and I love her in everything. To each his own. When it comes to acting, I never saw her being off in anything, but the oportunities were not that great, so it's hard for me to say what she's capable of.

She started young, has dance training, and is 46, so she's experienced but still can play young (can't really put an age on her, never could).

For actresses that's key, you need experience before you can act reliably, but by then you often look too old for the parts they need.

I think she's a mid actress, but her dancing background gives her much more physicality to her roles, which matters when covered in goop, and makes up for what I consider her weak and wooden facial acting (though she was warm in the terminal).

Also she's an uno +4 when it comes to race, so that's another thing director's don't have to worry about.

I wonder if some of it is also being good to work with. I was just having a discussion with musician friends about how I don’t know how some people keep managing to get hired for gigs because I suspect they procrastinate looking at music, but they’re fun and otherwise reliable people so the hiring manager or whatever keeps hiring them because they like them, even if they’re not the most excellent musicians.

[–] FlyingSquid@lemmy.world 4 points 1 day ago

I could definitely see that as a possibility.
