It is a well known fact that John Lennon did not have the best relationship with his son Julian, whom he, along with his first wife Cynthia Lennon, left in 1968, when Julian was just 5 years old. But the phrase "John Lennon beat his wife" is just inaccurate and misleading. Yes, he slapped Cynthia while drunk on one occasion (which subsequently caused her head to hit a wall) in August of 1958 (that was very early in their relationship). But, during the time of the Beatles' popularity, John Lennon did not do any physical harm to Cynthia. He even acknowledged his past with her on multiple occasions including the Beatles' 1967 song Getting Better, also having apologized to Cynthia, with her stating
He was desperately sorry, it was just an instant and he couldn’t help himself. He didn’t do it again, and I wouldn’t have been with him if he had. It was the first and last time he lifted a finger to me.
His second wife Yoko Ono stated never to have been physically harmed by John.
With that being said, I hope that someday this bullshit will be erased from people's minds. John Lennon was not as bad of a human being as many people put him, period.
