You cannot see the toys move but you can see if they've moved around or changed something in their environment. That's pretty much how particle physics works.

Particles ganging up on a lone scientist in the lab late at night:

Woody creepily breaking the rule about not moving when people are watching and telling Sid to “play nice” after he and many other toy confront the child about his abusive behavior towards them.

There a whole branch of quantum mechanics research that's trying increasingly complicated ways of not looking at the particles while trying to sneak a look.
