There is definitely some truth to this, although many more expensive devices aren't all that much better when it comes stl security updates.
I have a Qualcomm-based high end router from ASUS, the thing get update about once a year. This is in contrast to their regular routers that get fixes once every 3-6 months (relatives have a Asuswrt-Merlin device).
