Having a monarchy is stupid, but not as stupid as selling the Royal Mail to foreign billionaires.

How is "he [still] needs remunerating" a valid objection to employees owning a share in the company?

I don't think he understands how shares work. If I hold shares in a company it doesn't matter if I work for the company or not.

I've actually worked at places where part of the remuneration was as shares in the company. Startups. I left I wasn't required to give the shares back that would make no sense.
