Showerthoughts

A "Showerthought" is a simple term used to describe the thoughts that pop into your head while you're doing everyday things like taking a shower, driving, or just daydreaming. The most popular seem to be lighthearted clever little truths, hidden in daily life.

Here are some examples to inspire your own showerthoughts:

Rules

  1. All posts must be showerthoughts
  2. The entire showerthought must be in the title
  3. No politics
    • If your topic is in a grey area, please phrase it to emphasize the fascinating aspects, not the dramatic aspects. You can do this by avoiding overly politicized terms such as "capitalism" and "communism". If you must make comparisons, you can say something is different without saying something is better/worse.
    • A good place for politics is c/politicaldiscussion
  4. Posts must be original/unique
  5. Adhere to Lemmy's Code of Conduct and the TOS

If you made it this far, showerthoughts is accepting new mods. This community is generally tame so its not a lot of work, but having a few more mods would help reports get addressed a little sooner.

Whats it like to be a mod? Reports just show up as messages in your Lemmy inbox, and if a different mod has already addressed the report, the message goes away and you never worry about it.

Sorry to say that the fast majority of German Nazis did not only get off without any form of repercussions after 1945, they often even kept their jobs in government. The Nürnberg and subsequent trials only covered the high profile cases, that had not successfully fled. For the Nürnberg trials that were 22 people, while the subsequent trials only found 2,500 of 100,000 arrested Germans guilty of war crimes. Of those only 177 were tried, 142 were convinced and 25 were sentenced to death. These numbers also exclude the 1,600 German scientists, engineers and technicians that the US government took with project paperclip.

And it wasn't for a lack of documents.

There are a surprising amount of German surnames in Argentina and Brazil

[–] WoodScientist@sh.itjust.works 1 points 5 days ago

Those were the evil Germans immigrating after the war. Not to be confused with the fine upstanding Ohio Hitlers.

One stay in Germany and become the rector of a managerial university, died in 2000ish with national funeral

Dox them all, let 4chan sort them out

[–] SpicyColdFartChamber@lemm.ee 7 points 5 days ago (1 children)

4chan

I've got some bad news...

[–] moseschrute@lemmy.ml 8 points 5 days ago (2 children)

pretty sure they’re back as of like yesterday

[–] WhatSay@slrpnk.net 3 points 5 days ago

You can starve the trolls, but you can't ever get rid of them

pretty sure the ice agents are the ones posting on 4chan

[–] cupcakezealot@lemmy.blahaj.zone 8 points 5 days ago (1 children)

there should be publicized webpages of all ice and cbp agents all over the internet. just dox them all and their families.

[–] Korhaka@sopuli.xyz 3 points 5 days ago

Perhaps a federated platform for it?

[–] Fleur_@aussie.zone 21 points 6 days ago (2 children)

I don't think there's gonna be a Nuremberg trials this time around

[–] MushuChupacabra@lemmy.world 10 points 6 days ago (1 children)

The trials will be home brewed.

Americans don't like being told what to do by foreigners.

This time around though, there will be no appeasement that allows for a Southern Strategy again.

[–] prole@lemmy.blahaj.zone 4 points 5 days ago

Well you're certainly more optimistic than me.

[–] Korhaka@sopuli.xyz 1 points 5 days ago

Don't have to wait for trials. Operation anthropoid is an example of some chads taking matters into their own hands.

You can evade justice if your Reich lasts long enough.

It's sad when old corrupt criminals just outlive any repercussions, and the systems that shields them becomes the norm.

[–] Korhaka@sopuli.xyz 1 points 5 days ago (1 children)

Even if WW2 was won by Germany, nazis were the targets of assassinations. They would not have been safe for the rest of their life.

[–] MushuChupacabra@lemmy.world 2 points 6 days ago (2 children)

Let's see how long this one lasts against one of the most well armed civilian populations in history, who have been fed a steady diet of the Right to Bear Arms, and Stand Your Ground.

The regime will be fucked the first time their ICE agents try to scoop a Don't Tread on Me type in the middle of the night, and get a bullet salad for their troubles.

By now, even the most fervent supporters can see that if one of them gets scooped by mistake, there is zero mechanism to correct it, and they're as good as dead.

"Fucked" how? You think they'll give a shit? MAGA people will just say the person deserved it, or was a secret liberal or some bullshit to justify it.

[–] MushuChupacabra@lemmy.world 2 points 5 days ago (1 children)

You're not grasping what I'm saying.

The regime is ruthless, but clumsy and stupid. They will attempt to kidnap the wrong person it'll be a staunch MAGA acolyte or someone they care about, and they're gonna Stand. Their. Ground.

You're probably going to say that that won't happen, on account of the populace being docile and pacified by job stability and low grocery prices.

[–] werty@sh.itjust.works 2 points 5 days ago (1 children)

Police shoot Americans every day and they put up with it. I'm not expecting them to rise up any time soon. The revolt was voting for Trump to burn it down lol

[–] MushuChupacabra@lemmy.world 1 points 5 days ago

Then step the fuck out of the way.

lol.

More violence is coming to USA, that seems a given, but daily shootouts just means more resources to the "militia" the gov uses/chooses to use. And that can get normalised. And the percentage of gun-owners killed vs ICE agents killed acceptable (basically nobody can reasonably fight off an armed force on their own, it's logistics, not a shonen match). Good TV news tho.

There is no deterrent in ICE getting shot on the job (that doesn't affect Washington at all), the deterrent would be gun owners grouping together & taking on the gov as a force.

To be fair, the only wars that the US has arguably lost, has been against irregular insurgencies.

[–] Evil_Shrubbery@lemm.ee 1 points 5 days ago (1 children)

Lol, that's is basically true-ish, but the counties, cultures, and infrastructure still got oblivioned ... also the conflicts ran for so long ... also2 domestically it would still count as a war & the president needs wartime excuses anyway.

[–] prole@lemmy.blahaj.zone 1 points 5 days ago* (last edited 5 days ago) (1 children)

Oh, it would be devastating... But if Ho Chi Minh could do it, I think a nation with ~1.2 firearms per person could end up on top...

Also, the military are still US citizens and many would refuse to turn their weapons on fellow citizens.

[–] Evil_Shrubbery@lemm.ee 1 points 5 days ago (1 children)

Where would the fighting take place?

Private homes? City blocks?
You can just torch those.

And can these people leave their homes/jobs without starving (and no foreign aid)?

ICE and the police are also citizens and don't seem to have much problem with it.

[–] prole@lemmy.blahaj.zone 1 points 4 days ago* (last edited 4 days ago) (1 children)

You're right. The Vietcong were an anomaly...

So were the Taliban in Fallujah I guess?

And there's a difference between a handful (by comparison) of ICE fuck heads doing what they're doing, and the US military following orders to drive tanks down city streets and slaughtering (often white!) citizens.

[–] Evil_Shrubbery@lemm.ee 1 points 4 days ago* (last edited 4 days ago)

I wasn't taking an offensive stance, just that merely restricting access to supermarkets in USA means starvation & loss of daily life on a grander scale than the same to the usual countries USA bombs.

And that actual freedom fighters usually arise from non-militant groups (ie not the ones hoarding weapons & dressing in tactical gear, but like teachers & such), ... unless the CIA or KGB directly funds and existing (usually fairly extreme in beliefs) fraction, which usually happens in proxi wars (then the winning daddy crowns their group the government "for stability").

But fighting in USA wouldn't take place in forests and caves. And foreign (food) aid would be really hard to get to individuals hiding.

So I don't think actual USA in-fighting can take place in terms of war-like conflicts you mentioned (where USA was the invader), bcs there would be no contest, but more like IRA fighting for Ireland's independence, or the French Resistance during WWII - individual (covert) strikes that leave the official gov unable to initiate direct conflicts & have to rely only upon their intelligence (and their own terrorist actions to put pressure on the people from the other side).

But it's not like ICE is the only militia, FBI is just one phone call away & even alone both forces can overwhelm any resistance groups, no matter how big, as long as they know where they are.

Now, if there would be a coup that leads to an actual civil war where two organised forces would fight (ie countries with their own militaries & lands), that would be much different, but also a lot would need to happen to get there.

(And I don't think the USA military wouldn't follow orders, they rarely refuse to kill civilians in other countries, so not quite the same culturally (yet! let propaganda cook), but militarily force on USA streets feels like "insubordinate" cities getting the Gaza special.)
